Podle koček dostala šanta také své jméno. Cataria se z latiny skutečně překládá jako kočičí. Někdy se označuje také latinským názvem catnip. Česky se jí říká také máta kočičí, kocourník, melisa nebo ožanka. Je příbuzná máta nebo marihuaně. Pochází ze Středomoří, ale v současnosti ji najdeme v přírodě celé Evropy či Severní Ameriky.
