About this deal

Bernardine Evaristo. I liked her distinctive voice and her way of telling a story in Girl, Woman, Other . I recognised a great deal of myself in that book and it was different from what I had found in French writers. Why did you put the matriarch Yamina, whose French-born children are nourished and overwhelmed by a love that “overflows like the Mediterranean”, at the heart of your book?

Faïza Guène est réalisatrice de plusieurs courts-métrages. Parmi ceux-ci, on notera : "La Zonzonnière" en 1999, "RTT et Rumeurs" en 2002 et "Rien que des mots" en 2004.Recently, Guène has started to question the foundations upon which she had built her identity, reading as much as she can about the history of Algeria, its colonisation, independence and immigrants in France.

Faïza Guène (born 7 June 1985) is a French writer and director, best known for her two novels, Kiffe kiffe demain and Du rêve pour les oufs. She has also directed several short films, including Rien que des mots (2004). It’s like a film script and we’re the actors. Trouble is, our scriptwriter’s got no talent. And he’s never heard of happily ever after.” This coming of age novel was recommended to me by Rida and while I didn’t like it as much as I had hoped to, I did find it very stark and honest in its portrayal of life on the poor side in Paris, France. I don’t know about you guys but I have a very selective way of thinking about Paris. To me, it is the city of lights, romance and fluffy pastries. Before I read this book, I didn’t think about the people who populated the city, who breathe, live and animate this city. There’s this authenticity in the narrator’s voice, this matter of fact manner of relating facts that I could not help but respond to.The difference with her parents’ generation and their children’s, says Guène, is that they accepted not being considered French because they hadn’t grown up in France. “But I was told that I was French, a child of the republic. It was an unkept promise.” Il y a bien sûr dans les surprises agréables, des éléments de réticences… (Sinon, on serait dans l'angélisme total, et ce n'est pas le lieu !). He has written a manuscript for another novel , to be published in March. The subject is another "hot topic" – women and equality. Guven says it's about a man who is writing a story about waking up in a world dominated by women. Later when my breasts are bigger and I’m a little bit more intelligent, like when I’m adult, I’ll join up with a group that helps people...
