Richardson’s role, he tells me, “is to be humiliated and look embarrassed”. Meet the Richardsons provides him with ample opportunity, as he bursts into flames at a children’s party while dressed as a monkey, or – in the new series – disappoints his comedy hero, Ben Elton. Is it right to assume his haplessness and Beaumont’s career anxiety are all exaggerated for comic effect (she has, after all, been nominated for a Bafta for her performance)? “That’s Lucy’s skill as a writer,” says Richardson. “To understand that sitcom is driven by a need. If we’re successful and happy and calm, you lose that fundamental element of comedy.” When she toured her 2014 show, interviewees constantly asked ‘Are women as funny as men?’ Beaumont says. “It got in my head. I had terrible self-doubt. It really affected me.” She changed how she presented herself. “I used to take my make-up off before I went on stage and put on a hoodie. If I didn’t, I was getting things shouted at me like ‘Get your tits out’. It just made me more and more nervous.” Former New Romantic to direct bad boy biopic". The Guardian. 8 November 1999 . There’s a Q&A you did with your mum, playwrightGill Adams, in the book. Would you consider publishing a book with your mum? From TV's award-winning comedy mum and the writer of Hullraisers, Lucy Beaumont, comes her hilarious debut on the trials and tribulations of motherhood.

I loved the later setting of Hebden Bridge having lived in Bradford for 9 years and also loved the earlier home life tales from Surbiton, 2 vastly different places yet more similar than you would imagine She’s got a Netflix accent now! Born prematurely in Truro while her parents were on holiday in Cornwall, Beaumont grew up with a single mother [2] in the Spring Bank area of Hull. She later lived in the town of Hessle, near Hull. [4] [5] Her mother is the playwright Gill Adams, who won the Fringe First Award for best new play in 1997 at the Edinburgh Festival. [6] She attended Hessle High School, [7] before going on to Wyke Sixth Form College. [8] Beaumont worked at the meat counter of Asda on Hessle Road, West Hull, [3] and later went on to the University of Hull, graduating with a degree in drama studies. At times with the newborn and toddler we could relate... and last night it was only after reading this that I remembered to take my bra off as we had been dealing with a Huffy Gabbie as to why she could not take her Easter Bumble Bee to bed with us ( it squeaks and rustles plus her Brother had already destroyed his Sloth and was eyeing Stripes ( name of Bumble Bee) up next! Beaumont was a contestant in the 16th series of Taskmaster, broadcast September–November 2023 and placing fifth. [38] Filmography [ edit ] Television [ edit ] Year If you are looking for an easy read, one that is going to make you laugh then this is a book for you. I'll be recommending this to fellow parents and to anyone in need of a feel good funny read. I’ll eat anything really! If there’s a good vegan option, I’ll normally have that, but there very rarely is. You can tell when someone’s cooking it if they’re vegan because they understand that you don’t just want butternut squash and that you still want something “meaty”. But fish and chips is still my favourite – Cave Street Fisheries in Hull is where I go!’

The book opens with a chapter entitled “My life as a normal, single human being before everything changed”, which has some childhood memories (which actually continue throughout the book), involving gazebos and other memorable moments. The next goes on to her meeting and getting together with Jon, who adds “interruptions” through the book. Jon is a vegan, and she becomes one apart from during pregnancy, but both admit to lapses which include dead cows and her mother’s cooking when she arrives on mercy missions. She comes up with ten reasons why she wants a baby - which includes having a white carpet like in the adverts. Experienced baby carers will know that she is being foolishly optimistic at this point. She actually writes “The more I write, the more it’s dawning on me I’m not picturing a real baby, I’m picturing a calendar”. The challenges of pregnancy and antenatal groups are described with humour and brutal honesty, especially with her husband in attendance. She remembers stories of her own birth while her mother was on holiday, some points of which she sends to her mother some time later to clarify points of confusion - just to make sure that family legends are actually true. The actual birth story spares no details, including Jon’s strange urge to buy a four man tent. The unexplained post natal sadness (thankfully fairly brief) and the night feed experience is detailed, as well as the joys of baby massage (she is disappointed that the mums don’t get massaged). Soon Elsie the baby becomes the toddler, the bright child and all with a determination to sabotage sleep.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes memoir-style books, light-hearted reads about parenting young children, and anyone who is a fan of Meet the Richardsons. Beaumont married comedian Jon Richardson in April 2015 after being match-made by fellow comedian Roisin Conaty. [49] They have a daughter born in 2016. [50] [3] In 2023, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with severe ADHD. [51] Works [ edit ] Beaumont was passed over for a couple of roles, subjected to smallminded comments (“an actor’s husband said, and this crushed me, ‘You’re never going to play Juliet at the RSC with your accent’”), then told by a casting director that they were looking for comedians who could act. She’d always been told she was funny. Auditioning for TV parts, she’d accidentally turn drama into comedy: “I went to one for Casualty, an audition for this woman who’d had a horrific accident, and they were in floods of tears laughing at me.” In 2011, she decided to try stand-up for the first time.
