There is no ignition key on this Mountfield SP53, so for added safety, Mountfield has gone with a Operator Presence Control (OPC) lever – the operator must have at least one hand griping the safety handle before the machine will start. A 60-litre grass box is plenty big enough for most large gardens but the whole thing can start to feel a bit heavy when blasting through wet grass.

If you feel you can handle the 20kg weight and you’d prefer to save yourself some money, Mountfield make the same mower without the self-propelling feature. The chassis on the Mountfield SP51H 3-in-1 Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower benefits from a powder-coated paint finish that’s both corrosion- and scratch-resistant. Complete with a large 60 litre grass collector, plus a mulching plug; meaning you don't always need to collect the grass and can recycle grass clippings into the lawn, saving time plus fertilising the lawn. It benefits from a robust powder coated steel chassis with front scalp plate, reducing scalping of the lawn and improving grass collection. That said, if you simply want to get the job done and you’re not fussed about stripes, ignore this criticism. OK, it doesn’t create that striped finish that many lawnsmiths strive for. That said, a lawn doesn’t need stripes to look beautifully manicured. Yes there are a few negatives as you can see above in the Cons section but these are really minor points and do not detract from the fact that this is yet again a quality Mountfield Self-Propelled Petrol Mower. As I said earlier, topping it up with oil and fuel is also very easy as the filler caps are on top of the engine. This mower has a 39cm cutting width and a 40-litre grass collection bag which makes it a good option for small to medium sized lawns up to 400sq meters. The self-propulsion, driving the blade and the rear wheels, is activated when the user lifts the throttle bar up towards the main bar to engage the clutch.
