In 2017 they moved the distilling from London to St Andrew’s and added a ‘Distil Your Own’ experience to their tour offering, inviting visitors to create their own recipe from a selection of botanicals and distil a 70cl bottle of gin to take home. It also depends on what kind of distillery you want to visit. For example, if you’re interested in Royal history, then Royal Lochnagar would be a good choice. But if you wanted a smaller, more intimate tour experience then Speyside Distillery would be a good option. Can you get tastings and tours at the distilleries?

It’s a dry and zesty gin, and being from an island containing approximately 161 residents, there’s something especially unique about the product. It’s actually known to be ‘first legal spirit from an island rooted in centuries of illicit distilling’ too.

It is made with hand-pressed limes and oranges; the same fresh fruit which has been zested to make our bestselling Zesty Citrus Gin. They also have a Simmer gin, which is inspired by the Shetland skies and summer twilight and features notes of orange and liquorice, and have created limited edition spirits such as one for the Up Helly Aa Festival. Nestled at the foot of the Pentland Hills on the edge of the capital, The Old Curiosity distillery is probably the most magical setting in which to learn more about gin. Like the breed, this is spicy and lively on the palate with a gentle coating (made with nutmeg and cinnamon). The gin combines botanicals such as fresh apple, elderberry and wild clover, as well as juniper, coriander, orange peel, lemon peel and cassia. Try it neat with some ice and it’s wonderfully aromatic and smooth, or pair it with elderflower tonic and a mint sprig.

While a conventional tour isn't available, it is well worth visiting the distillery's gin school, which offers visitors the chance to sample straight from the still and to create your own custom Crossbill blends. If you’re a fan of yuzu like me then you’ll enjoy this citrus-forward bottling from Japanese producer Kyoya Shuzo, known for its shōchūs. The expression uses a base of sweet potato shōchū and a selection of botanicals such as yuzu and hyuganatsu citrus fruits, juniper, and sansho pepper. Their gin comes in three core bottlings – navy-strength, original and the 1947 – as well as the occasional limited edition.It’s strange how the advice to drink eight glasses of water a day seems impossible to achieve – but six glasses of gin at a tasting? That goes down like a chubby kid on a see-saw.” Take a trip to Glenshee This is our favourite of the trio by far; it’s complex and totally unique, and with tonic is akin to an ice cream float. We’d garnish with a cherry to keep going down this path and if we were feeling particularly outrageous, we’d probably add a scoop of vanilla ice cream as well. Our Dachshund expression is a lime gin liqueur, made using freshly pressed limes with fruit left over from our award-winning Zesty Citrus Gin.What makes the gin traditional is bags of juniper on the nose. What makes it soft and warming is cardamom and coriander, which rise to the surface once you add tonic.
