About this deal

I really enjoyed this first class thriller and recommend it especially to those sun-starved listeners like me who are craving all the pleasure of a fabulous holiday whodunnit which will keep you guessing right up until the last minute. The luxury resort is surrounded by the sea and the dense beauty of the jungle. It is the perfect place to forget about the stresses of life and work, also included is childcare ... what more could you want? Laurel Shelton lives in a heavily wooded area of North Carolina. There’s a sense that the place is haunted. Native Americans never settled in the patch of land, and the first European settlers soon died after their arrival. The Appalachian town is superstitious, and after both of Laurel’s parents die, she is considered to be an evil spirit, possibly a witch, and is ostracized by the community. he's an awful character, but a wonderfully-written character. and definitely my favorite in this book. This is the kind of adult thriller that has largely turned me off reading adult thrillers - two married couples and their children decide to spend a long weekend together on a remote idyllic and largely empty island. The tension between them builds over the course of the trip and someone ends up dead.

The first novel in her Alexander Gregory Thrillers series, Impostor, was shortlisted in the British Book Awards 2020: Crime & Thriller Book of the Year. The audiobook of Impostor, narrated by Hugh Dancy, was also selected as a finalist in the New York Festivals Radio Awards, Best Fiction Audiobook of the Year Category.

I didn't realize that L.J. Ross was starting a new series this year and I was so happy by this surprise! Engagingly told, this was a nice addition to the books already published by this author. While hardly a police procedural, it did have the right amount of mystery for a work of women's fiction. So if you're in the market for a story about something that could easily happen to any of us a tragic incident resulting in psychological issues that also includes a touch of mystery, give this book a whirl. I liked the super small town feel of the community, and the relationship that the heroine had with her boss and landlady was lovely. My only complaint is that it could've been longer and the ending felt very rushed. As for Laurel, look elsewhere if your preference is for passionate heroines, what she does have is an appealing resiliency, an understated strength. What develops is quietly muted – a love that deepens as slowly & gently as the river that runs through The Cove. With its raw beauty & pervading isolation, it’s The Cove itself that’s the heart of this novel "Nothing but shadow land, there wasn't a gloamier place in the whole Blue Ridge." That and the Appalachian people, brought to life by Rash’s use of simple dialect. “Not being able to talk, that’s got to be burdensome too. I’d think it could make you feel a lavish of aloneness. After my daddy died and Hank was over in France, I was here by myself and it was a hard row to hoe.” Like others have said, the dialogue was pretty unbelievable. The only place I could imagine hearing people talk like that is in bad cop shows.

Era tanto che aspettava, aveva aspettato a casa e anche qui, aspettato che la vita iniziasse, la sua vita. Each review score is between 1-10. Part two opens to a military recruiter, Sgt. Chauncey Feith, giving a toast to Boyce Clayton at the local tavern, Turkey Trot. Boyce’s nephew, Paul, is in the hospital due to his war wounds. Grudgingly, Boyce accepts the toast. Boyce is not so subtle with his dislike toward Paul. Unlike many of the men in the region, Chauncey isn’t a soldier because he claims to be busy recruiting for the war effort. He’s a charlatan who makes a big show of being a patriot. One of his favorite pastimes is going to the local library to ban any and all books written in German. I found this a solidly enjoyable thriller with multiple mysteries that were exposed along the course of the narrative, to ensure my continued enjoyment, throughout. The couples at the centre of it had as much to hide as those working around them, it was soon proved, which further heightened my intrigue and twisted the unfolding storyline. I didn't wholly guess the direction and found the stakes heightened more than I could have anticipated, which made for such tense reading!

The weekend starts well with the couples relaxing on the beach whilst the children are happily distracted. It is exactly what they need. But appearances can be deceiving.

Trigger warnings: suicide (in the past), death of a parent (in the past), alcohol abuse, death, death of a spouse, disappearance of a child, explosions, murder, blood I found myself lost on this beautiful island as I read this book. It was beautifully descriptive and I could almost feel the salt on my skin while reading. (I think I need a seaside break – I haven’t seen the ocean in ages.) I loved the twists along the way. Deep in the rugged Appalachians of North Carolina lies the cove, a dark, forbidding place where spirits and fetches wander, and even the light fears to travel. Or so the townsfolk of Mars Hill believe - just as they know that Laurel Shelton, the lonely young woman who lives within its shadows, is a witch. Alone except for her brother, Hank, newly returned from the trenches of France, she aches for her life to begin. We see that locals are resentful of the resort, the couples themselves are hiding secrets from each other and there’s the added tension of an impending monsoon to contend with. Hank and Walter work together to dig a well. Laurel buys material to make a dress for when she and Walter can head for NYC when the war is over. Chauncey awaits a letter from governor and finally receives it only to hear that the governor will not attend Paul Clayton's coming home party. Hank and Walter continue to work on the well and Walter nearly has an accident. The incident gave all three a fright, but they're all alright.
