About this deal

Jason Kuhl (July/August 1998). “Slave Vats of the Yuan-ti”. In Christopher Perkins ed. Dungeon #69 ( Wizards of the Coast) (69)., p. 10. Make the Abomination hard to reach. Put them at the end of a serpentine labyrinth behind Broodguards, Purebloods, and Malisons. Athrendel is grateful for his release and will happily accompany the party for the remainder of the dungeon. He is unaware of the temple’s layout, but knows the names of the important Yuan-Ti and their general role in the temple’s hierarchy. He can also warn the party about Ssilkashla’s goal of becoming a Yuan-Ti Anathema. Lore-wise, their transformation into reptilian creatures made them behave less like people. That means they have no emotions, making choices based on logic and survival, similar to how Lizardfolk are portrayed, but a bit more evil. Still, it is up Ed Greenwood, Eric L. Boyd, Darrin Drader (July 2004). Serpent Kingdoms. ( Wizards of the Coast), p. 9. ISBN 0-7869-3277-5.

Yuan-ti had their own language, [6] [4] [7] which used the Draconic alphabet, [21] and most could also speak Common. [6] [4] [7] Draconic [4] and Abyssal were also typically known. [4] Some sages reported that all yuan-ti could also communicate readily with any snake or snake-like creature. [6] [7] Architecture [ ] Except for invisibility, the pit master’s spells are somewhat suboptimal, and it’s better off leading with Meershaulk’s Slumber. On its second turn, it will close to melee range and fight hand-to-hand. After taking moderate damage (reduced to 61 hp or fewer), it will cast vampiric touch to regain some of its lost hit points. If it’s completely surrounded, it will cast misty step to break the siege, and if an enemy spellcaster hurls fireball or lightning bolt its way, it will snuff it out with counterspell; this is the only thing it will use counterspell for, because its slots are scarce, and those are the only two spells of 3rd level or below that can do truly significant damage to it and its allies. Aside from these two circumstances, it will save its second spell slot until round 4 or later, and most likely use it for a second casting of vampiric touch.

Produce Acid: The yuan-ti can exude acid from its body, dealing 1d6 points of damage to anything it touches. The acid becomes inert when it leaves the yuan-ti's body. The Yuan-Ti was reprinted and updated in Monsters of the Multiverse, where they dropped the term “pureblood”, they gained the new standard ability score mechanics, their poison immunity was reduced to resistance, and Magic Resistance now only applies to spells rather than spells and magical effects. Treasure: Yaotal wears several overlapping golden chains across his shoulders with a cumulative value of 800 GP. Yaotal the Yuan-Ti Pit Master (VGtM) can be found here if he has not been encountered elsewhere. He is never separated from his companion Swarm of Poisonous Snakes save for his time in the private bath (room 11).The yuan-ti were once humans who thrived in the earliest days of civilization and worshipped serpents as totem animals. They lauded the serpent's sinuous flexibility, its calculated poise, and its deadly strike. Their advanced philosophy taught the virtue of detachment from emotion and of clear, focused thought. Yuan-ti culture was among the richest in the mortal world. Their warriors were legendary, their empires always expanding. Yuan-ti temples stood at the centers of ancient metropolises, reaching ever higher in prayer to the gods they longed to emulate. In time, the serpent gods heard those prayers, their sibilant voices responding from the darkness as they told the yuan-ti what they must do. The yuan-ti religion grew more fanatical in its devotion. Cults bound themselves to the worship of the serpent gods and imitated their ways, indulging in cannibalism and humanoid sacrifice. Through foul sorcery, the yuan-ti bred with snakes, utterly sacrificing their humanity to become like the serpent gods in form, as well as in thought and emotion. Innate Spellcasting (Abomination Form Only). The yuan-ti’s innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). The yuan-ti can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

Yuan-Ti purebloods appear as humans with snakelike features, such as snake eyes, scaly patches of skin, or serpent's tongues, Purebloods may have any hair color humans can have. In Yuan-Ti society, they are seen as the lowest caste. Treasure: Ssilkashla wears ornate golden ornamentation embedded into her scales. If carefully removed, their collective value is worth 1200 GP. She also wears a Ring of Mind Shielding. Abominations possessed various innate psionic abilities that made them deadly warriors: they could induce a severe aversion to snakes in any creature within 30 ft (9.1 m) of them, forcing that creature to stay at least 20 ft (6.1 m) from any snake they saw; they could produce acid to coat their scales, or change the color of their scales to match their surroundings; they could detect poison at will; and they could shapechange into the form of a viper of variable size. [3] Yuan-Ti abominations appear as anthropomorphic serpents, and are taller than other Yuan-Ti. In Yuan-Ti society, they are seen as the higher caste.Yuan-ti also create a highly addictive drug called white resin, made from rare herbs and yuan-ti venom. They introduce it into humanoid populations, using the drug to manipulate them. They also use them to control their slaves, but they're reluctant to do this too much, as extended use of white resin can drive humanoids mad, giving them reptilian features that obligate the yuan-ti to care for them after they become too mentally ill to work, due to their reverence of reptilian beings. Skip Williams, Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook (July 2003). Monster Manual v.3.5. ( Wizards of the Coast), p. 264. ISBN 0-7869-2893-X. The original version of Magic Resistance was a controversial racial trait. Magical effects include things like magical traps and many creatures’ special abilities (beholders, etc.), so the Yuan-Ti Pureblood has a widely-applicable defense that can immediately become a balance problem. As a player you want to look for other bonuses to your saves so that you can nearly guarantee success on saving throws, but as a DM you want ways to challenge and threaten players and there are only so many varieties of nonmagical breath weapons and the like. The updated version of the Yuan-Ti is less problematic, as Magic Resistance only applies to spells.
