They may invoke our names and leave their offerings and whisper their prayers, but it is up to them, ultimately, to devise their destiny.” i really enjoyed the conclusion to this rumpelstiltskin-inspired story. it maintains the dark and violent atmosphere that was established in the first book, the characters continue to develop realistically, and the plot is wrapped up in a very satisfying way. there were moments it felt a little drawn out (this is quite a lengthy book), but there are so many other positives to make up for that.

Soon Serilda realizes that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever. It was the same with the children left sleeping in her chambers. The Erlking pretended they were a gift for her. Attendants for his queen. But they were also his spies. I genuinely love Meyer's style of writing and her always clever take on classic stories. In my opinion, she's the queen of retellings. Az első része a duológiának egy elég nagy csalódás volt, így hát félve kezdtem bele ebbe a kötetbe, de az írónőnek szerencsére sikerült egy kicsit összekapnia magát. It’s dark and macabre in all the best ways, with a cast of curious characters and strange creatures. And for all you cover judgers, this one’s a contender for the year’s best, bringing all the haunting fairytale vibes you could possibly want. Az első könyvet ajánlom és ha a vége nem olyan lenne, talán még standalone-ként is megállná a helyét.

Whilst the pacing issues that plagued the first book do continue, the lulls aren’t quite so noticeable this time around, and that’s because Meyer’s sequel feels more layered than the book that came before. Shifting the focus to the Erlking and the gods who separated him from his beloved Huntress adds another dimension to the tale. The stakes are higher than ever but Serilda is such a clever, resourceful and kind-hearted character – you can’t help but root for her. There aren’t as many scenes between her and Gild as you’d expect, given their romance is key to the story, but any moments alone that they share are always funny, sweet and tinged with the bittersweet knowledge that they both have so much to lose if the Erlking wins. She found, in trying to get to know the resident ghosts, that the closer someone had been to the royal family, the fewer memories they had of their lives before the massacre. A maid who scrubbed pots and pans in the scullery might remember her former life almost in its entirety, but someone who had regularly been in the presence of the king and queen, or prince and princess, would remember almost nothing. In a classic power move, the Erlking forces Serilda to become his wife. He's hoping to be able to use her powers for his own gain. She plays along, mildly, as she has her own agenda going on under the Erlking's nose; keep your enemies close and all that.
