The Vivo X90 Pro is a powerful flagship by any measure, with perhaps the best phone camera you can buy outside of China – though it’s not without compromises. It’s not just a great camera phone either; it has a gorgeous 7.78-inch AMOLED display with a buttery-smooth dynamic 120Hz refresh rate that makes everything feel near instantaneous. Throw in a MediaTek 9200 chipset, all-day battery life and the ability to charge to 100% in less than half an hour and you’ve got a tempting flagship smartphone. The Dimensity 9200 doesn't quite hold its own in multi-core workloads, but a clear positive for MediaTek is that Arm's Immortalis-G715 clearly offers a similar level of power as the Adreno 740, and you'll notice the difference when gaming. All three lenses benefit from Vivo’s partnership with Zeiss with the company’s patented Zeiss T* lens coating, along with the ability to capture a more muted, true-to-life image with Zeiss’ Natural Colour 2.0 tech, as well as unique shooting modes including Miniature Effect and Cine-flare Portrait effects that can produce some fun results in the right hands.

In addition to the Dimensity 9200, the X90 Pro features Vivo's custom V2 imaging hardware that takes care of the image processing and powers the AI-based tasks on the device. The highlight on the camera front this year is the use of the Sony IMX989 module for the 50MP main camera — this is the same 1-inch hardware that Xiaomi introduced last year on the 12S Ultra and used on the 13 Pro this year. Having used all the major Android releases over the course of 2023, it's clear that the X90 Pro can hold its own against the best Android phones. I like the direction Vivo is taking with the X series, and while earlier models focused a bit too much on the camera prowess to the detriment of other areas, that isn't the case on the X90 Pro — this is a well-rounded device that doesn't have any major shortcomings. Vivo’s X90 Pro is a premium smartphone with a high-end design to match. That includes the regular combination of a slimline aluminium frame and edge-to-edge display with two curved edges that allow the phone to sit comfortably in the palm of the hand. But flip the phone over, and you’ll find a vegan leather rear in place of the regular glass used by most high-end alternatives.
The Vivo’s chipset isn’t quite as good and the screen isn’t as high resolution as the S23 Ultra's, but those are about the only weak links on paper. Now, the caveat here is that the 120W charging mode is disabled by default, so you'll need to go into the settings to enable it. Vivo offers the Balanced mode out of the box, and in this setting, the charge doesn't go beyond 30W. Vivo's 120W tech is mature enough that there are no issues in using it daily, but if you're worried about battery degradation, the Balanced mode is an ideal solution.

The 50MP main camera is joined by a 50MP telephoto with OIS and 2x optical zoom, and a 12MP wide-angle lens with a 108-degree field of view. Up front, you get a 32MP camera with a fixed focus that can shoot 1080p videos. Expect other stalwarts of the high-end display experience including a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate that’ll automatically adjust depending on what you’re doing in a bid to provide decent battery life while making every tap and swipe feel immediate. Impressive camera setup The main 50.3MP snapper has a 1-inch sensor that allows for unparalleled performance in low-light conditions, as well as a 50MP 2x telephoto lens with OIS and a 12MP ultrawide ideal for capturing expansive scenes.My only real complaint is that 2x zoom is a little bit limited compared to other 2023 flagships like the Galaxy S23’s 3.5x zoom and the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 10x zoom. You’ve got the option of digital zoom but with it comes a sacrifice to overall quality. It’s admittedly a small thing that most users will overlook within days of use, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t prefer a nice flat display. Flip the phone over and you’ll find a single 32MP hole-punch camera centrally embedded within the display. It’s great for selfies and video calls, but I’d leave most of the photography to those impressive rear lenses.
