About this deal

With the recent rise in energy costs, you might be considering ways to cut down on your electricity usage. Many of the best kettles claim to be energy efficient but determining which is the best energy efficient model isn’t as simple as trusting the manufacturers claims. Most multi-temperature kettles have larger bases with the controls on them. Not so with the Cuisinart Signature Collection Multi-temp Kettle, which has everything built into its handle. That’s useful if you don’t have much space in your kitchen, as this kettle doesn’t take up any more room than a regular one. That aside, if you want a small kettle that can get to multiple temperatures, this is a good choice.

Finally, think about noise. The difference between our quietest and loudest kettles, which measured in at 52 and 63 decibels, is considerable, although everyone’s tolerance to noise is different. The iKettle 3rd Gen has a built-in water sensor that sends information to the app to alert you if there’s not enough water in the kettle. With a simple glance at your phone, you can easily decide if the iKettle needs a refill. You can even use the app’s Wake Up Mode to wake you up via an alarm and start boiling water at the same time. Taking a maximum of 1.7-litres, with a minimum boil of 500ml, this is a good-sized kettle. It can be hard to see the fill lines on the side of kettle, which are marked in litres only, not cups. From the front, there are buttons to select the temperature you want: 70°C, 80°C, 90°C and 100°C. Although it’s been more than three years since the iKettle launched the 3 rd generation of its iKettle line, there has been no news of the release of a fourth iteration. There’s no doubt that the developers at Smarter are working on designing new ways to improve the current iKettle, but so far, no news has been forthcoming. Make sure that you’re using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. If you have a dual-band router, make sure it’s set to 2.4 GHz and not 5 GHz. The iKettle isn’t compatible with 5 GHz routers.

From the essential to the optional, here are some of the key features to consider when choosing a kettle. Minimum fill/one-cup boil Aside from also being able to tell Alexa to turn off the kettle if you decide you don’t want it boiling, that’s it for your voice commands. I really wish the kettle could offer a readout of its capacity; otherwise, you need to keep jumping into the app – or, heaven forbid, get up and manually look inside the kettle to ensure there’s enough water for your next cuppa. Should you buy it?

But a week on from setting up the iKettle 3.0, it works fine. Saying “Alexa, turn on the kettle” has the kettle boiling without any issues – I named the device ‘Kettle’ as it seemed most logical. It’s meant I’ve done away with the Wake Up mode, as I can just ask Alexa to turn on the kettle when I wake – or not, if the occasion dictates. You can also say “Alexa, set the kettle to X degrees” – which, again, is easier than jumping into the app. So, on firing up the app you first need to select the location and then the appliance, before you’re at the screen necessary to begin using the kettle. It’s a minor frustration – one that could so easily be improved. These allow you to select a range of different temperatures to heat your water to. This is handy if you're partial to herbal or green tea, and coffee, as these drinks work better when brewed at slightly cooler temperatures. It’s fairly easy to use, too: hit the 100°C button to boil; hit 85°C to start at this temperature, and then the + button to increase temperature by 5°C. Our only complaint is that 85°C is quite a high starting temperature, which is good enough for hot drinks but not, for example, baby bottles. Still, as the screen shows the current temperature on the screen, a boil can be interrupted manually at a lower level. One of the negatives to iKettle’s mobile automation is that it depends a lot on the app for its features. You can still boil water manually using the button on the kettle, but all the other convenient factors like scheduling and specific temperature adjustments are limited to the app.
