MSI recently launched two new MAG QHD monitors in India targeted at the midrange gaming crowd — the Optix MAG274QRF and the Optix MAG274QRX — both of which feature 27-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) G-Sync compatible panels. While theOptix MAG274QRF offers a 165 Hz refresh rate and 300 nits brightness, theOptix MAG274QRX can hit a 240 Hz refresh rate and 350 nits typical brightness that can go up to 400 nits peak for HDR content. On the other hand, 1440p offers an advantage in performance, since it demands far less of a GPU than 4K resolution. The EX270QM is a 240Hz monitor, which implies it’s meant for playing games at a high refresh rate. From that perspective, 1440p is an ideal resolution. The monitor comes with picture-in-picture (PIP) and picture-by-picture (PBP) modes for simultaneously viewing video from multiple sources. KVM 2.0 is available as well.
The BenQ Mobiuz EX270QM has some potential as a multi-use monitor for both hardcore gaming and serious professional workflows. It has the color gamut many content creators will crave and 1440p resolution which, while not as good as 4K, remains an acceptable middle ground for a variety of content creation. All the expected ports for a monitor in this price segment are present, but the HDMI port is still based on the 2.0 standard which limits the maximum refresh rate to 144 Hz. Power consumption is fairly economical as long as you don't use the panel at 100% brightness. HDR support is present, but you should be looking at this monitor primarily for its SDR performance. When the NIS function is enabled on PC, then the NIS will select 4K resolution to output on 1440p monitors. Resulting in the loss of NIS benefits, and limiting FPS because you are running games on 4K resolution. The highest refresh rate at 4K is only 60Hz. This problem can be avoided, however, with BenQ’s bundled remote control. This handy feature, which is unusual among monitors, is a far better way to control a monitor. It’s intuitive and doesn’t require hunching over to find the monitor’s buttons.

Response times are good for a gaming monitor, though it is not OLED-level. It is possible to further reduce response times, but that comes at the expense of overshoot and ghosting. Enabling MPRT Sync can reduce the ghosting effects to a large extent, but it also reduces display brightness significantly. The monitor’s maximum resolution of 1440p provides a pixel density of about 108 pixels per inch. This isn’t as high as a 4K monitor of the same size, which provides 163 pixels per inch, but high enough to offer good clarity in most situations. I only found the resolution’s limits noticeable when viewing fine fonts or small interface elements, which display hints of pixelation. Motion clarity is excellent at 240Hz. Enemy units, health bars, and names remain legible when scrolling across the field of battle in League of Legends. Enemy units and health bars are legible on a 144Hz or 165Hz monitor, but names aren’t. The EX270QM retained significant detail in the Blur Busters’ UFO test, as well, with almost all elements of the funny little alien visible aside from his trio of eyes, which blurred into a pair of peepers. The BenQ Mobiuz EX270QM makes a good first impression at default settings. It’s bright, but not too bright, with a maximum SDR brightness of 360 nits which, surprisingly, is adjusted down to a more comfortable setting in the monitor’s default game mode.
Build quality: Sturdy plastic construction
While the EX270QM’s day-to-day performance doesn’t hold up for professionals, it remains attractive in casual use. The monitor’s solid brightness, good text clarity, and wide color gamut provide good results when browsing the web or viewing YouTube. The monitor’s superior built-in speakers are another plus, offering strong sound that, for some owners, will make external speakers unnecessary. BenQ EX270QM – The Competition TheOptix MAG274QRX also features a console mode for hooking up the Xbox or PlayStation consoles. Console mode basically downscales the 4K output from the console to the monitor's 1440p standard. The feature also gets variable refresh rate support with the latest firmware update.

While the stand is sturdy, its wedge-shaped legs take up significant space on a desk and make that space unusable. Most gaming monitors use a stand similar to the EX270QM, but I’d prefer a flat base, which can be found on competitors such as the Dell Gaming and Asus TUF Gaming line. The MSI Optix MAG274QRX features a “Rapid IPS” panel with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. As seen in the sub-pixel matrix image below, the pixel size is quite large given that the panel yields a density of just 108 PPI. The monitor consumes an average of 31 W at 50% brightness and this rises to 41.5 W at 100% brightness, both with MPRT Sync disabled. Enabling MPRT Sync drops the average energy requirement from the wall to 27.5 W.
