A suspenseful yet poignant science fiction novel that deftly weaves scientific theories with the equally complex relationship between two very different sisters.”— School Library Journal, starred review Maisie wakes up on her 10th birthday to find everyone has disappeared. Adams, Stephen (4 January 2008). "Amateur historian unearths Nazi battery". The Daily Telegraph . Retrieved 16 January 2020. The revelation by Eli Mills leading Maisie to view herself as "not a real person" and just Charlotte's clone giving her mental trouble. But Kayla changed her mind; when spotting Claire being chased; by one of Santos' Attrociraptors and saved her and Owen. Now agreeing to help the two get to BioSyn and rescue Maisie as she realized that; she could've done something sooner. Upon reuniting the parents with her daughter, Maisie recognized Kayla and held no ill will to the pilot. Later on, Kayla would help save Maisie's life with a flare to distract the Giganotosaurus, allowing the girl and her parents to get to the BioSyn chopper and finally get out of harms way. Sometime after Maisie's birth, Charlotte had contracted a genetic disease that; would also affect Maisie. But; with her experience as a geneticist, she managed to not only create a cure for the disease; but completely eradicate it from Maisie's body. But sadly this was not able to save Charlotte's life.I have to admit that I found Maisie rather frustrating as a character at first – she comes across a bit “Sheldon-like” (from the Big Bang Theory) in the way that she spouts scientific knowledge, or needlessly overcomplicates things (most scientists are unlikely to think of smelling something cooking as “the molecules” that make up the smell weaving their way to the “odour receptors” in their nose for example!). However I found that she grew on me as the book progressed, especially in the otherworldly sections; here you are reminded that she is only a scared child, albeit a very smart one, who is having to face her fears and proves to be hugely resilient in doing so. The other character that features heavily is Maisie’s sister, Lily; initially a somewhat stereotypical teenage girl. But, as with Maisie, she is driven by incredibly relatable insecurities – whereas Maisie has no friends and is thought of as a “freak”, Lily is tormented by feeling like she cannot compare to her younger sister. Much later in the book we get to see a truly different side of her, and it is both heart-warming and heart-breaking. Schmitt, Rüdiger. "Persian Loanwords and Names in Greek". Encyclopædia Iranica . The story is laid out in an interesting way, with alternating chapters set in the two different “worlds”. The fantastical chapters keep the pace up from the get-go, never giving Maisie or the reader a chance to get their bearings. Having them intercut with the “slice of life” style content leaves you constantly off-kilter as you try to work out how and where the two connect. With only a couple of chapters to go, it all starts coming together in almost horrifying slow-motion, with the audience able to see what’s coming but powerless to stop it, and compelled to keep reading.
