About this deal

The sketches Derf drew of Jeff as the "Minister of Propaganda" for the Dahmer Fan Club. He put Jeff in his drawings for student election flyers and Revere High's yearbook (where the other characters are all speaking in "Dahmerisms.") Also the police. They pull over Jeff after his first murder and believe his story that the bags in his trunk are full of garbage, even though he's driving to the landfill at three in the morning and the body parts inside the bags (in the middle of summer) would have reeked. If only someone had noticed…or what if someone had spoken up…There must be a whole town contemplating those questions even today—years later. *more chills* The narrative is passionate and authentic. I disagree with other reviewers about the writer's objective to portray himself as a good person and to put the blame on everyone else. To the contrary, he does not conceal the fact that he and his friends contributed to Dahmer's misery, and the author's shame is apparent.

Sometimes when reading non-fiction it feels like it is just an extended research paper. But, when the author was actually involved in the events, it gains a bit more of a personal investment. My Friend Dahmer is definitely the most intense first-hand non-fiction I have ever read. It's not just another exposé on a horrifying story, it is well fleshed out, truthful retelling of previously little known events from before the nightmare began. I took from it that Dahmer was a pretty strange closed-off guy that no-one liked at high school. A thing you’d learn from a documentary about the guy or opening paragraphs of articles about his life. a b c d Grossman, Lev (2012-03-28). "My Friend Dahmer: The Unspeakable Horror of Life in the 1970s". Time. ISSN 0040-781X . Retrieved 2022-08-05. Attention Whore: What Lloyd Figg, with all his Ax-Crazy antics (though no doubt a troubled kid with serious issues 'upstairs') likely turned out to be. As Derf wasn't in the house to overhear them, Jeff's final interaction with his mother is entirely conjectural.Ross Lynch is eerily good as Dahmer, like a very young Philip Seymour Hoffman – stolidly silent, heavy-footed, incubating his resentments. He has a shed out in the yard for dissolving roadkill animals in acid, a preoccupation very much disapproved of by his dad Lionel (Dallas Roberts) who nonetheless senses that Jeff may have inherited this obsessional quality from him. Anne Heche is hilarious as Jeff’s boozy, unstable mother who is a terrible cook and insists the family eat her calamitous dishes as a learning experience. “We eat our mistakes,” she says cheerily – an unfortunate motto, considering her son’s later adventures in cannibalism – and she will later hurt Jeff’s feelings during the divorce proceedings by appearing to argue that she should be given custody of his younger brother Dave (Liam Koeth) while not caring about Jeff. Meanwhile, Jeff cultivates his own obsession with animal cruelty and with stalking the town doctor (Vincent Kartheiser) who jogs past his house every other day. An Aesop: If someone shows signs of distress or mental illness, intervene as soon as possible or those problems will get worse.

I Hate Past Me: Derf doesn't hate his teenage self, per se, but he is terribly embarrassed by how ridiculously insensitive he and his friends could be.

Derf's comic, later expanded into a much longer graphic novel released in 2012, chronicles the years he spent together with Dahmer in high school, unknowingly witnessing his friend's transformation into one of the most infamous serial killers in modern history. Along the way, Derf asks pertinent questions about why nobody – especially the adults– ever saw the warning signs of what Dahmer was becoming. The Collector of the Strange: First roadkill, then skulls belonging to live animals he has killed. It's a Foregone Conclusion what Jeff will move on to next... This subject is extremely lurid but My Friend Dahmer is sober and thoughtful. At the heart of the story is the problem that you really never do know what’s happening with your son, your friend, your brother, your husband, your colleague, your boss, your father, your sister, your mother, your partner. As the Chiffons sang in May 1965, when Jeff was 5 years old
