The onset of menstruation (menarche) is an important time for girls. It heralds their future fertility, of course, but it’s much more than that. Menarche is also when girls start to make female hormones for the first time. As it happens, there is a new 2015 randomised controlled trial of zinc for period pain → https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26132140. Magnesium has been studies as well → https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2349410. Naturopathic doctor Lara Briden wants to give women the knowledge and tools to improve their period health. Half the population will menstruate in their lifetime, and 1 in 2 women will struggle with their period health. Lara’s book, previously self-published, has already this important aspect of women’s health openly and compassionately. Containing invaluable advice for women of every age and circumstance, and detailing natural treatments from nutritional supplements to a healthy diet, this book promises to help women change their relationship with their menstrual cycle. Topics include how to come off hormonal birth control; what your period should be like; what can go wrong; how to talk to your doctor; treatment protocols for all common period problems, including PCOS and endometriosis. Thoroughly researched and written in clear and accessible language, Period Repair Manual is the ultimate guide to better periods. Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden – eBook Details

PDF / EPUB File Name: Period_Repair_Manual_2nd_Edition_-_Lara_Briden.pdf, Period_Repair_Manual_2nd_Edition_-_Lara_Briden.epubI’ve had many patients with a similar story to yours, and what we do is first (while still on the Pill), test for underlying issues which may be the cause of the anovulatory cycles (such as thyroid and insulin). If there’s a problem, we correct it. We can’t test for female hormones while on birth control, so then my patients come off the Pill, and then we test their female hormones and male hormone (androgens) which are typically elevated in PCOS. Then we treat that with nutrition and herbs. I describe this process in my book, and I also provide some patient stories. One of the core concepts of this book is that menstruation is a legitimate VITAL SIGN. It provides clues about your general health and whether your body and hormones are functioning properly. Yet, doctors generally opt to shut off this vital sign (with The Pill) when it starts telling us that something is wrong instead of trying to find out the cause and correct it. HOLY SHIT Y’ALL!!!! HOW IS THIS A THING!!!!???? Please let this sink in for a minute. We are essentially lobotomizing our reproductive systems, usually temporarily but sometimes permanently, because the medical establishment is unwilling to do any research into this topic because hormones are “too complicated.” How is this “do no harm”? Women commit suicide over severe PMS and it is well-known that hormonal birth control is linked to depression. I can’t say I’ve met anyone who has truly been happy with their experience on hormonal birth control – it is treated as a necessary evil, but apparently it doesn’t have to be that way. Can you please post links to clinical studies (not case reports) regarding the efficacy of your suggested dairy and sugar free diet and supplements on reducing cramps and eliminating endometriosis? Serum progesterone above 4 ng/mL (13 nmol/L) confirms ovulation but ideally, it should be at least 8 ng/mL (25 nmol/L). The more progesterone, the better. It’s not possible to have “too much” progesterone, except in the case of exogenous supplementation (taking progesterone). But the way Briden keeps talking about hormonal contraception throughout the book makes it seem like she believes it's a thing from the depths of hell. I had a bad experience with the pill and I know lots of people who went through the same things. But I also know a bunch of people for whom the pill works and that's marvelous for them and I hope it keeps helping them and I don't like how Briden insists that everyone should stop using it.

Magnesium calms the nervous system and regulates the HPA axis. Your stress control system (HPA) axis is your central hormonal system, so when it functions well, it supports your other hormones. Magnesium deficiency is common because modern soils are depleted, and your body dumps magnesium during stress. So, if you’re under stress, you probably need magnesium. Why am I nearly THIRTY SEVEN years old and no one ever taught me this stuff???????? I feel that I have been deprived of extremely important medical information for the majority of my life, to the (sometimes severe) detriment of my health and wellbeing. All because the existing medical establishment is too lazy and cheap to actually research the female body and reproductive functions, instead opting to shut them off with hormonal birth control any time there is an issue. I understand your passion advocating natural methods and celebrate your ‘ideal world’ point of view but there are issues with the recommendations in this post that you have not covered – it reads more like a magazine article than a thinking woman’s viewpoint. If you wrote more information about the specifics including the agony of IUD insertion in the teenaged cervix (recommended under general anaesthetic in Australia especially for anyone who has not had a pregnancy); as well as the important role of the contraceptive pill in preventing teen/early pregnancy (or teens having to seek abortion) in an emotionally hectic time of school/boys/angst etc, I think your article would be more rounded. It would be wonderful if these sweeping statements you make were true but we live in a time where teenagers are faced with many stressors (for example cyber-bullying, drugs, body image/media to name a few) and this approach will not and can not ‘fit’ all of our young women. Your information is interesting and thought provoking but you need to make allowances for those reading your article who do not embody your target audience with a brief message about how your view is not the answer for every young girl.

How to avoid binge-eating chocolate cake during your periods". nine.com.au. Channel Nine Australia. 2018-06-12 . Retrieved 2019-04-18. From 1997 to 2002, Briden worked in private practice in rural Alberta. In 2002 she moved to Sydney, Australia where she established a practice focusing on women’s health issues. You mention agonizing cramps but not the cause of your cramps or the other treatment options you were given. There will be some people for whom the pill is the only option, but the problem is with the fact that too often doctors will use the pill as a bandaid rather than investigating and offering treatment options. This culture means that often teens are being prescribed hormonal birth control when it is far from the best option for them in general and means that they are not getting appropriate health care. For Endometriosis the pill does take the pain away because it stops the production of hormones. However this does not treat the root issue, often times endometriosis is due to high levels of cortisol which is stress hormone combined with a diet that’s usually filled with dairy usually causes this. If not this case, I would have to inquire more information, however in my practice I see cases like this often times. There are a lot of things you can do for your daughter while she is taking birth control for her endometriosis, but I really encourage you an exit strategy from birth control to something more manageable. Making hormones is not easy. It requires regular ovulation, and that can take a few years to become established. That’s why the early years of menstruation are exactly the wrong time to take hormonal birth control. Yet, unfortunately, that’s when more and more girls start taking it. According to a new study [1], this decade has seen a 50 percent jump in the number of young teens (12-15 years old) using medication such as Pills, injection, implant, and Nuvaring. These girls are at risk for many of the side effects of hormonal birth control including:

This book states that omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in vegetable oils promote inflammatory prostaglandins. This claim is not cited. In fact, omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids have not been shown to cause inflammation in humans (PMID:22889633) or even to increase arachidonic acid (PMID: 21663641). What’s more, a science advisory noted that in human studies, higher levels of omega-6 PUFAs were associated with decreased levels of proinflammatory markers and increased levels of antiinflammatory markers (PMID: 19171857). Lara Briden is a naturopathic doctor and bestselling author of the books Period Repair Manual and Hormone Repair Manual — practical guides for treating period problems with nutrition, supplements, and bioidentical hormones. This is not the kind of book that you necessarily want to let all your friends on goodreads know that you have read. But I want to give it a review, because it is an amazingly helpful and empowering book, and I believe that all women should read it. Hi Hannah, Short term use of the Pill can give relief from symptoms, so of course the decision will be between you and your gynecologist. I expect she will do some testing to try to determine why you were having short 2 week cycles. A short cycle is an anovulatory cycle, which means you had not been ovulating. Your doctor can do further investigation, including blood tests, to figure out WHY you hadn’t been ovulating (for example: insulin resistance, thyroid, or gluten problem). This book will not mention when a study is done in mice or in vitro. Even if this book is for the layperson, it is still important information. To give one example, the book states, “endometriosis has been linked to dioxin exposure in the womb.” Yet the reference is an article about mice (which do not menstruate). My hormones are out of control. I am 25 and I am getting a period every 2 weeks, I have acne worse than ever before, I have joint aches, inability to concentrate, my face is blotchy, agonizing cramps, exhaustion…I have an appointment with a holistic gynecologist in 2 days, took me over a month to get an appointment..my regular Dr gave me birth control last month…Is it okay for the time being? Copper intrauterine device (IUD): Unlike hormonal birth control, the copper IUD does not suppress ovulation or hormones. Instead, it prevents pregnancy by impairing sperm motility and implantation. It is also highly effective with a failure rate of just 0.6 percent. The September 2012 guidelines from American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) state that copper IUDs are safe for women who have never had children and for teenagers. This overturns a pervasive—but unfounded—opinion that IUDs should not be used until after childbirth.

Magnesium fuels healthy mitochondria, which are important for hormonal health because steroid hormones are made in the mitochondria. The road to progesterone is long. It takes one hundred days for ovarian follicles (eggs) to journey all the way to maturity and cross the finish line to ovulation. In other words, it takes one hundred days of being healthy and fully nourished to finally achieve ovulation and progesterone. I went on the pill at 14, partially for heavy painful periods, the other part was a paranoid mother who was pregnant at age 18 herself and wanted to avoid any mishaps with her daughters. There is no accurate way to test for magnesium deficiency. A serum test is not helpful because most magnesium is inside the cells. A test for red cell magnesium is a bit better but still not very accurate.

You can read an essay about body literacy and learn about alternatives to hormonal birth control including the pros and cons of the copper IUD (Paragard). I am not strongly pro-IUD, and I’m alert to any new evidence against it. My first choice is Fertility Awareness Method, but I do think copper IUD is a far better option than hormonal birth control. I have since turned my health and life around as a holistic healer who has had 15 years of study and application….but it’s not near where I could be, my period will never return (12 years without it, ovaries necrotic) and I can manage just fine with what’s left over for symptoms. I truly believe as a society we have been gaslit into thinking that hormonal birth control is a feminist concept, but what would ACTUALLY be feminist is learning about the female body and teaching folks with a female reproductive system how to properly take care of it, and maybe, just maybe, doing some research into male birth control (as I understand the technology very much exists but funding for clinical trials and approval does not). I appreciate the author’s sentiment that she’s not 100% against using hormonal birth control, but it should be prescribed only if the person using it is fully aware of what it actually does to their body (it doesn’t “regulate your hormones” - it shuts them off) and/or other less invasive options have been carefully considered and ruled out if the birth control is being used for a medical condition. Which is typically never the case.
