Edwidge Danticat - 1864 Words | Bartleby

Her life in this book is a "no holds barred" book. She is brutally honest, says it as it is and discloses what she has gone through, warts and all. Overall, I thought it was a powerful book. One that is open and honest. With everything I already stated, Amanda does disclose how she finally got into writing and how she made her dream of becoming an author come true. The role the library played in her childhood in establishing her love of reading. She covers it all. I love a good memoir but sometimes dislike that everyone writes memoirs these days that can be somewhat dark and depressing and I struggle to read them. Amanda throws it all out there in her memoir Women Like Us. It is a story about the beauty and pain she experienced throughout her life.Welcoming the victims in is just the first step. Having them come consistently and start training establishes ongoing commitment and improvement. The impact of the programs is beyond just the attendees. It also helps the lives of their kids and creates a new spirit of awareness and achievement in their community. Most recently, even the men in the community have started showing interest in group therapy. It is with pride and love that I can share this announcement with our friends, supporters, and donors of the Women Like Us Foundation. We have been honored to have you on our team and standing with us as we built Women Like Us Center skills programs in Kenya. This is Amanda Prowse’s memoir and from beginning to end it is a book of her ‘life in a filing cabinet’ her daily struggles with food and yo-yo weight problems and other devastating life’s tragedies.

Amanda is a down to earth, 'real' woman who shares her struggles through life, from being an army wife to her battles with cancer (yes, two of them) and how her family coped wither son Josh's depression. This also focuses a lot on her struggles with her weight, from being underweight, average weight and overweight and the efforts that each has bought. She even graces us with her own self-esteem challenges. So many women (men too, but more women) struggle with their self-worth, defining themselves by how they think other people view them. Read that again…how they think other people view them. And Amanda made me think about how I feel about myself and my own challenges in this very moment. We even got to chat with the girls post show, they’re just as hilarious unscripted as they are with a microphone in hand. Two totally relatable ladies who hit the nail on the head of charismatic female comedy. I give Amanda Prowse so much credit for having the courage to share her life with the world. Not easy!I loved this book!! I follow Amanda Prowse on social media and have always enjoyed and related well to her candid way of writing about her own life. Amanda’s story is heartbreaking and honest and brave and uplifting and makes me want to be better for myself. She offers up her lifelong journey here, and I have to be honest, it took me a couple of weeks to get through it. It made me reflect on my own struggles. Sometimes it was hard—really hard—and I couldn’t bring myself to keep reading. I needed a break to really appreciate what I felt. Her unflinching honesty, tenacity and verve make Prowse a hugely relatable and likeable narrator. She deftly taps into a universal theme of what it means to be a woman in a world where beauty, slimness, popularity and youth all remain desirable currency. I would recommend this book to women over 40. I don't know if I would have appreciated the author's struggles in my younger adult years.
