About this deal

Allicin breaks down to form a variety of organosulfur compounds, which are associated with protective effects. These include diallyl trisulfide (DATS), diallyl disulfide (DADS) and diallyl sulfide (DAS). There is a link between the functioning of the immune system and cancer. In an early study (1960), explants of mouse-tumours were incubated in allicin before implantation into healthy mice. In contrast to the control group (where the explants were not allicin-treated), mice with tumour explants incubated in allicin showed no further growth of the explant [ 102]. Ried K. Here’s where things get a little confusing. Garlic supplements do contain allinase and alliin (the precursors to allicin). If the garlic supplement is enterically coated, it can get to the small intestine (which has a more-neutral pH) without being damaged. The alliin can then be converted into allicin for the body to use. 10 If you have SIBO, IBS, or fructose intolerance, your body might react badly to garlic because it contains FODMAPs. You can read more about FODMAPs here. The most common complaint after taking garlic tablets or oil is increased breath and body odor. Some also experience gastrointestinal symptoms, such as heartburn, abdominal pain, belching, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, constipation and diarrhea. Lissiman E, Bhasale AL, Cohen M. Garlic for the common cold. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2014;2014(11):CD006206. doi:10.1002/14651858.CD006206.pub4 Garlic/allicin benefits have been found to include fighting cancer, protecting cardiovascular health, lowering oxidative stress and inflammatory reactions, protecting the brain, and naturally fighting infections. There are numerous compounds in garlic which are responsible for these health benefits, but researchers have pinpointed one in particular for its outstanding health benefits: allicin. Unfortunately though, getting the health benefits of allicin isn’t as easy as popping a garlic supplement.

While dosage recommendations vary depending on someone’s health, the most commonly used doses (such as for supporting cardiovascular health) range from of 600 to 1,200 milligrams per day of garlic powder, usually divided into multiple doses. This should equate to about 3.6 to 5.4 mg/day of potential allicin. That said, there’s some evidence that allicin and garlic supplements can have hypolipidemic, antiplatelet and pro-circulatory effects. They may help improve cardiovascular function by lowering blood pressure, protecting against atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and by reducing inflammation, lipoprotein modification and uptake of LDL “bad cholesterol.” The enzyme allinase converts alliin (a derivative of the amino acid cysteine) into allicin. It is allicin which gives garlic its strong aroma. This strong aroma keeps pests away, and also has antibacterial and antifungal properties to protect the plant from infection. Ried K, Fakler P. Nutr Rev. 2013;71(5):282-99. doi: 10.1111/nure.12012.Garlic doesn’t normally contain allicin. However, if the garlic plant is injured in some way – such as getting chopped up with your kitchen knife – a chemical reaction starts to occur. How allicin affects cancer cells has been examined at the molecular level. It became clear that the induction of apoptosis was crucial for the anti-cancer effect of allicin. As discussed in the yeast system (see above), allicin also causes a redox-shift in human cell cultures [ 103]. This leads to the execution of cell death, both in a caspase-dependent [ 104] and caspase-independent manner [ 105]. Beside caspase activity, the apoptosis inducing factor (AIF), which contributes to the apoptotic DNA-laddering, is involved in allicin-induced cell death ( ibid.). Choo S, Chin VK, Wong EH, et al. Open Acc J of Toxicol. 2020;4(5). doi:10.19080/OAJT.2020.04.555647 Allicin causes bleaching of seedlings: Sterile filter papers were placed on Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium and were sown with Col-0 A. thaliana wild type seeds. Following stratification (4 °C, 48 h), seeds were allowed to germinate and grow for three days. For allicin treatment, the filter papers were transferred onto MS medium containing different amounts of allicin. Effects on the seedlings were recorded 48 h after allicin treatment. Bleached seedlings showed either partial or complete bleaching, whereas green seedlings showed no signs of bleaching. Percival SS. Aged garlic extract modifies human immunity. Some studies have found that during one minute in the microwave or 45 minutes in the oven, a significant amount has been lost, including almost all anticancer activity.
