About this deal

This was the beginning of the ship series. This is one of her most famous series which culminates with the 1969 “The Ship who sang.” In 1966, she became the secretary/treasurer of the Science Fiction Writers of America. “The Ship who Mourned,” her fourth story was published in 1966. “The Ship who Killed” which was her fifth story was published in the late 1966. Weyr Search" won the inaugural Hugo Award for Best Novella in 1968 and "Dragonrider" won the Nebula Award for Best Novella in 1969 (both were finalists for both awards). Dragonquest, The White Dragon, Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern and All the Weyrs of Pern were among the five annual finalists for the best novel Hugo Award. At this time, Wingleader F'lar of Benden Weyr travels to High Reaches Hold with his wing in the hopes of finding a suitable candidate for «Weyrwoman» in the upcoming Hatching. The previous Weyrwoman, Jora, has recently died, and her dragon Nemorth has laid one final clutch with a queen egg — the egg-layers of the dragons. If the queen does not Impress at the Hatching, it will die, and the dragons will go extinct. Good pacing. Generally the plots move along well, and almost every scene (except some in White Dragon, more on that later) moves one or more of the plotlines forward. Does the character that took that action feel remorse? Yes, however he had no choice in the matter of the act. But he could have forewarned his wronged counterpart. Guilty by omission.

McCaffrey, Todd (1999). Dragonholder: The Life and Dreams (So Far) of Anne McCaffrey by her son. New York: Ballantine. ISBN 978-0-345-42217-0.A reread after many years, which holds up well. Not much style but a lot of substance--settlers fleeing a dying Earth emigrate across the stars to a planet in orbit around Rukbat. A story for our times for sure.

Her first novel, the Restoree is a story about a twenty four year old librarian from New York. The young woman is named Sara. She is abducted by the Mil, alien creatures that eat human flesh. She is however kept alive but with her skin removed. She stays in that condition until the alien ship she is in is captured by humans from the planet Lothar. The people of Pern are exploring the southern continent with a view to moving some of their people there, as the population seems to be increasing now where before it had gotten very small. In the process of this exploration, they find the remains of the ships in which their ancestors originally came to Pern. Dragonsong 4th US printing publication contents at the Internet Speculative Fiction Database. Retrieved 2011-11-14.I would recommend this series of books to anyone who loves science fiction. Not only are these 3 novels full of suspense and adventure you tend to fall in love with certain characters. The relationships of the people are well developed and engaging as we'll as the complex relationships between the people and their awesome dragons. One is the shaking thing. What is with that? F‘lar pretty much expects Lessa to obey him without question and likes to shake her into submission, when she doesn‘t. Ok, there is an instance of affectionate shaking as well. Whatever that is supposed to be. How Lessa didn‘t develop whiplash remains a mystery. Dragonflight is in many ways a problematic book. Questionable attitudes, the at times dislikeable characters and the slightly uneven details of world building and power. However there is a lot the book gets right, in the creation of its world, and (eventually), in the depiction of its characters. I remember very well the last time in my life I read an Anne McCaffrey novel. In the end of my first term at university as an undergrad, I started a new McCaffrey I'd not read before and found that I was able to predict who would be the book's love interest just from their physical description. My lady in fact has even accused McCaffrey on occasion of somewhat conforming to the tropes of fifties romance, particularly with F'lar. Whatever the reason I can say this makes F'lar a little difficult to like at several points in the book.
