About this deal

Nay brother,” Oswald shook his head. “You have responsibilities here. Your son is not yet nine months old. Linnet needs you here with her.” Oswald Vawdry is the King’s spy master. He’s quiet, but incredibly intelligent. He’s been celibate for ten years, and focuses most of his attention on running the kingdom behind the scenes for his King. This book does a great job setting up for two of the later books in the series, "An Ill-Made Match" and "Wed by Proxy". Plus, Roland was a twit in "Her Baseborn Bridegroom", but was much more likable in this book, which is great considering that he's the hero in "An Ill-Made Match". N-no,” she sobbed. Her whole body was trembling, she was strung so taut. Being inside her was almost unbearable. Her body’s embrace was so hot, and tight he felt like he might lose his mind if she did not give him full reign over it. Fenella Thane is a desperate woman. Her absentee husband of eight years has served her with divorce papers and she looks likely to lose her beloved home and be forced into a convent.

My biggest complaint - Fen was too passive. Everything happened to Fen, the divorce, the play, the painting, the gossips. There wasn’t much Fen actually did out of her own accordance. To be honest I didn’t understand, why? Why did she not talk to Oswald about the play? I really didn’t feel like it was a big enough plot point to create such an entire mess over. It could have easily been stopped if she had just shut it down in the beginning. He rolled onto his side taking her with him, so his weight was no longer pinning her to the pillows. “You’re not in discomfort?” he clarified, carefully dropping his hand to cup her bottom.

He gazed past the gown to focus on her and the blue gown she wore. “Very lovely,” he said. “Take off that gown,” he said testily. “I don’t want to see you wearing it again.” I loved this couple and the disjointed way they come together. It was so much fun watching Oswald yield to love and devotion when that was the very last thing he had wanted. This had just enough angst in it to make my heart hurt for Fen. Her interactions with the other ladies kept me an edge as I waited for what tidbit might be dropped regarding her husband or even gossip about herself. Forgive me Linnet, I know how well-suited you and Mason are together. I flatter myself that I was one of the first to appreciate it.” He paused, considering his words. “Even two brothers can be cut from different cloths. I do not think that sort of life would suit me. I am set in my bachelor ways now. My career…my position at court are what consume my days.” Fen has been tossed aside by her husband and in an attempt to salvage herself she carries her betrothal papers to court in an effort to force Oswald to champion her before the King. Within moments of entering his office, she discovers some most astounding news that turns her life upside down.

Oswald smiled at this and took a small sip of wine. “Why? Because Father practically moved in with you, after his grandchildren were born?” You’ve taken me,” he said gruffly. If she compared him now to Thane he wasn’t sure how he would react.Linnet's gaze was very steady and suddenly he found he was the one avoiding their keen regard. For all her gentleness, his sister-in-law could be uncomfortably perceptive at times. He gave a short laugh. “My personality is very different to Mason and my father's,” he pointed out. She looked, quite frankly, astonished. “Oh,” she said. Then seemed to struggle for words. “Of course, if that’s what you want, husband-“

Yes,” she breathed and gave a small wriggle which made him groan. “Are you, alright?” she asked uncertainly. I really liked reading about Fenella and Oswald but surprisingly, I enjoyed the other parts of this book too. I found it entertaining watching Fenella balance court life and the politics that surround it. While there were a lot of characters to remember, I found myself following each of their side stories fairly easily too.Mason pursed his lips and fetched a pitcher of apple wine off a side-table. He poured two goblets. “Not for want of trying,” said Mason with a sigh, thinking of their late father's seat which lay some fifty miles north of Cadwallader. “If you would wait for a month or so, then I could accompany you...” Third read: may as well just go with 5 stars because I love this story. I actually cried a bit at the angsty parts while listening to the audiobook… a first for me with this book…I think I’m PMSing though. Holy hells. He didn’t have it in him to debate with her any further. With a muffled groan he surged forward into her, bracing his arms against the mattress to try and keep himself from squashing her flat into the mattress. She gave a faint yelp, but offered no resistance as he hammered into her with renewed vigor. “Fenella,” he said hoarsely. For no fathomable reason he wanted her eyes on him, her mouth on him, her hands on him. The poor girl had no idea. He was so greedy for her, it actually scared him a little. How did you tell your wife you wanted her hands squeezing your ass, tight? Her mouth, framing your name? Oswald shook his head. It had never entered his head to ask such a thing of any bed-partner. It beggared belief that he would want it now from his wedded wife.
