About this deal

Our COM4 or COM7 is ideal for re-potting these plants. We also sellAkadama, which has been found to be a fantastic medium for growing Nepenthes. Some growers also use 50% perlite / Sphagnum moss mix with equally fantastic results and one which we also recommend. Nepenthes may be cultivated in greenhouses. Easier species include N.alata, N.ventricosa, N.khasiana, and N.sanguinea. These four species are highlanders ( N.alata has both lowland and highland forms), some easy lowlander species are N.rafflesiana, N.bicalcarata, N.mirabilis, and N.hirsuta. Nature. 477 (7365): 443–447. Bibcode: 2011Natur.477..443W. doi: 10.1038/nature10447. PMID 21938066. S2CID 4300247. Plant the cutting in sphagnum moss by placing the base of the cutting with the node directly in the potting medium. Water the cutting and then place the pot in an area with high humidity and access to bright light.

Whilst someone else replied: 'This is the only review of this cup I care about, sod water, target audience reached 😂♥️' Around the same time, German botanist Georg Eberhard Rumphius discovered two new Nepenthes species in the Malay Archipelago. Rumphius illustrated the first one, now considered synonymous with N.mirabilis, and gave it the name Cantharifera, meaning "tankard-bearer". The second, referred to as Canthariferaalba, is thought to have been N.maxima. Rumphius described the plants in his most famous work, the six-volume Herbarium Amboinense, a catalogue of the flora of Ambon Island. However, it would not be published until many years after his death. [52]

a b c Clarke, C.M. 1997. Nepenthes of Borneo. Natural History Publications (Borneo), Kota Kinabalu. Many growers have had success growing ‘lowland’ Nepenthes in heated greenhouses, conservatories, terrariums or even warm bathrooms. Nevertheless, these conditions, although not impossible, are not always readily providable in the average UK home. This is where we can look at the second category of Nepenthes. Highland’ Nepenthes may be grown at lower temperatures of around 21c during the day. Unlike their ‘lowland’ cousins, they appreciate the drop in night temperature to lows of 10c – 12c. These night time drops slow down their metabolism at night, which they need for healthy and vigorous growth. The ambient humidity should again be kept at least 60% but ideally higher.

With their uniqueand unusualleaf morphology,Nepenthes(colloquially known as ‘monkey-cups’)arearguablysome of theEarth’s mostbeautifulcarnivorous plants. The main stronghold of this genus is South-East Asia, with some of the most commonly available species coming from the islands of Borneo, Sumatra and numerous islands of the Philippines. Lowland species of Nepenthes need stereotypical ‘tropical’ environments to thrive in. They experience 25c – 35c daytime temperatures and nighttime lows of no less than 21c.They also grow in near-constant humidity levels of 80% or higher. The carriers called them "monkey cups," a name I had heard elsewhere in reference to Nepenthes, but the implication that monkeys drink the pitcher fluid seemed farfetched. I later proved it true. In Sarawak, I found an orangutan that had been raised as a pet and later freed. As I approached it gingerly in the forest, I offered it a half-full pitcher. To my surprise, the ape accepted it, and with the finesse of a lady at tea, executed a delicate bottoms-up. Zahl, P.A. (1964). "Malaysia's Giant Flowers and Insect-trapping Plants". National Geographic. 125 (5): 680–701.Nepenthes are slow growers during their first few years and can take 5-10 years to mature. Once they are established, they will begin to vine and grow rapidly. At this stage stems will loop around and cling to any available support. Be sure to provide the necessary support during this stage of growth.
