As long as you begin your turn with cards in your hand, you are not allowed in that turn to play from the cards you have on the table; you can only play from the cards in your hand on that turn. When an eight is played, the direction of play is reversed (so its function is similar to that of the joker in the main description). In this variation an eight can be played on any card. Eights are transparent - when playing on an eight, you must beat the first card under it that is not an eight. If an eight is played to the empty table, it reverses the direction of play as usual, and any card can beat it. If an eight is played on a seven, it will be the person who played the seven who has play a lower or equal card (or another eight or a ten). Players select which three cards out of the six they want in hand and on the table. Play for Winner Play continues until all of the cards have been drawn from the drawing pile. When this happens, continue to play the cards in your hand until you have no more left. After you have played all of the cards in your hand, begin playing your face-up cards. The same rules apply--you must play a card that is the same or higher than the previous card (unless a special card is played), and you can play more than one card if they are the same number. This game can accommodate 6 players if jokers are used. Jokers may be played at any time and they reverse the direction of the play. Jokers are not wildcards and can not be played with other cards. Shithead is a beating game in which the players try to avoid being the last to get rid of all their cards. The loser typically suffers some forfeit such as having to make the tea, or at least has the job of shuffling and dealing the next hand. These are the rules that I have always used playing Shithead. Once you have played all cards in hand and all your face-up cards, play your face-down cards blindly. On your turn, flip a face-down card onto the discard. If the card is playable, as in it is equal or higher rank than the previous card played, your turn is over and play passes on. If the card is not playable, after placing it on the discard you collect the pile, including your face-down card. The next discard is started by the player to your left. You must play all the cards in hand before flipping your next face-down card. Empty HandA joker can be played on anything and next player misses a turn. If there are just two players in the game this means that the player of the joker immediately plays another card of any value. In games of more than two players the joker is treated in one of three ways: as glass (like a 7) or with a value of 7, or with a value of 2. At your turn you can play an ascending sequence of consecutive cards in a single suit, provided that the first card beats the previous play. Sean Daly, describes a version of the game Karma, from Radford, Virginia, USA. The differences are as follows: The purpose of Shithead is to lose all your cards by putting them on the pile. A card that is put on the pile must be equal or higher than the top card of the pile. The first known instance of poop head, according to the OED, was Rebel Without a Cause (1955): In both the play and the movie Buzz Gunderson calls two adults a “couple old poop-heads.” Even then the term poop was relatively new, having evolved at the end of the 19th century from an onomatopoeia for the sound of pooping.
