About this deal

When I first heard about this book, I could not wait to get my hands on it!! I thought about Pete Souza's 2017 release, Obama: An Intimate Portrait, and how good it made me feel. I thought that this one would evoke similar emotions. Maybe with a little humor and biting sarcasm thrown in for good measure. Little did I know what was hiding behind the cover. On Earth-33, there is a magician called Shade, with the same powers as the main universe Shade. He is a member of the League of Shamans. [35] The blurb promised exactly the kind of thriller I would enjoy: return to childhood mysteries, brutal murder, heroine trying to make sense of it all. As usual, the blurb lied. Or, at least, it was obviously written by someone who had read only half of this novel.

He was a photographer with The Chicago Tribune, stationed at the Washington, D.C., bureau from 1998 to 2007; during this period he also followed the rise of then-Senator Obama to the presidency. —Wikipedia Souza had admired the qualities in the men he had worked and spent countless hours with as their official photographer. He had observed them every day and respect them for their hard work, for making tough but well-informed decisions on important issues after having asked thoughtful questions from their qualified staff and listening to advice. He was a non-partisan but admired the qualities of qualified leadership in both Presidents Reagan and Obama. I didn’t expect such a furore and didn’t deal with it well. I couldn’t sleep and was anxious, especially around the time of the movies. All I’d done was sit down and write something I’d have wanted to read, an erotic and fun romance,” she confessed in a new interview with The Times. Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2011 erotic romance novel by British author E. L. James. [1] It became the first instalment in the Fifty Shades novel series that follows the deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey. It contains explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving BDSM ( bondage/ discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism). Originally self-published as an ebook and print-on-demand in June 2011, the publishing rights to the novel were acquired by Vintage Books in March 2012.

[39] [40] Though portrayed in Silver Age comics as a thief with a cane that could manipulate shadows, the character was reinvented in 1994 as a morally ambiguous Victorian-era immortal who gained the ability to manipulate shadows and immortality from an unexplained mystical event. In 2009, the Shade was ranked as IGN's 89th-greatest villain of all time. [4] Souza writes in the introduction, "The White House now emanates a constant barrage of lies and hateful comments. The president acts like he does not respect democracy or the rule of law....He does not respect women, minorities, or immigrants; he often doesn't appear to respect even his wife." Souza skewers Trump repeatedly in all these areas and more, and concludes the intro by saying, "With this book, I'm standing up and shouting out. I can't be subtle any longer." There is no doubt Souza has deep feelings for President Obama. In this book he expresses some of those, ranging from dissatisfaction to outrage at what the following President attempted to do to Obama’s legacy and the “alternative facts” that were offered in support of the new Administration’s actions. A particularly important point in the life of Shade comes when he meets the demon-lord Neron. Neron offers, as he has done so with many supervillains before him, to enhance Shade's power. Shade sees little use in Neron's offer, as he has no need to increase his already substantial wealth, sees no way of heightening his shadows' power and is already immortal. Neron, angered by his rejection, swears vengeance against Shade. [18] I loved this book. So much. If you’ve seen any of Peter Souza’s photos of President Obama in the last couple of years and thought they offered an interestingly sane contrast to one of Donald Trump’s latest demented tweets, that was no mere coincidence. At the beginning of the media hype, Dr. Drew and sexologist Logan Levkoff discussed on The Today Show [50] whether the book perpetuated violence against women; Levkoff said that while that is an important subject, this trilogy had nothing to do with it– this was a book about a consensual relationship. Dr. Drew commented that the book was "horribly written" in addition to being "disturbing" but stated that "if the book enhances women's real-life sex lives and intimacy, so be it." During the 1960s, Shade briefly teams up with Doctor Fate to take down one of Culp's criminal ventures, a mystic organization called the Wise Fools, who wished to repeat the ritual that created him by summoning a wild, uncontrolled bubble of shadow (actually Culp's shadow, separated from the Shade by Culp). Unaware that Culp's consciousness is actually within the Shade, he and Dr. Fate destroy the Wise Fools operation and throw the bubble into an empty dimension (where it continues to grow in power and size). This was all part of Culp's larger plan, one which almost culminates in the destruction of Opal City.
