About this deal

Differences even out considerably at f/4, where the Sigma generally has slightly sharper center of the frame performance and the Tamron takes a couple of corners. In this regard my review has been impacted by restrictions in place during the Covid-19 outbreak here in WA state. With no team sports playing while I had this lens, and most parks and public places closed by law, I didn’t have the opportunity to test the Sigma for shooting sports and action as I normally would. J. Matthew Gore For general shooting, the Sigma produced wonderful color and contrast. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Nikon and Sigma mounts and the Canon mount version can be used on a Sony E-mount camera body via the But it can't focus anywhere near as closely, and so has a much weaker 0.25x maximum magnification as compared to the 0.34x of the Sigma. It does, however, have a more sophisticated AF drive mechanism pairing both linear and stepper motors.

Here is the angle of view that the new Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art covers with its 2.9x zoom (with distortion compensation):

In that comparison, you will find other f/2.8 lenses that perform noticeably better at f/2.8 than this one.

It doesn't feel overly heavy though, and we felt the E-mount variant balanced very nicely with our Sony A7R III body. Despite being just slightly longer, Sigma specs the E-mount version as being just a touch lighter at 830g (29.0oz) versus 835g (29.5oz) for the L-mount optic.Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots. Repeatability (the accuracy of focus on the same subject after repeated focus-acquisition) of this lens at 70mm focal length is very good (measured 99.1% in Reikan FoCal) with no outliers over a series of 40 shots. There is no focus variation whether the lens focuses from a closer distance or from infinity and I didn’t detect any hunting. At 70mm focal length the lens focuses in around 0.7 sec from infinity to 0.76m (1:10 magnification), which is as fast as the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III but slower than the Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S (on a Z7) at 0.5 sec. At the other end of the zoom, at the Tamron was occasionally more contrasty, creating a sharper appearance to the image overall, but resolution differences were negligible. In some parts of the frame, particularly at f/2.8, the Tamron appeared to produce marginally better resolution, but it was a difference only visible when pixel-peeping at 100% magnification. Matthew Gore | Light And Matter At the 70mm end of the zoom, the Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 28-75 produce nearly identical image quality, though the Tamron sometimes appears slightly better to me.

This is a bright lens (significantly brighter than the lenses included in camera kits) and it compares very well in this regard. The Tokina has about .5 stops less peripheral shading at f/2.8, though stopping down largely eliminates this difference. Slight improvement is seen in the periphery at f/5.6, but across the frame image quality is very good at f/4. The graph below shows the degree of corner shading visible in images from the three lenses at their longest focal length and widest aperture (when it will be most noticeable). The interior of the hood is ribbed to avoid reflections and small portions of the exterior mount area are ribbed or rubberized for easier grip.Though it feels like a solid chunk of lens in the hand, the 24-70mm Art lens is not that heavy and I didn't feel burdened even when carrying it on a nearly-4-mile hike in the national park. In addition to the obvious inclusion in the name, it is denoted by an "A" stamped in a classy chrome circle on the lens barrel. Thanks to its new VXD motor, autofocus performance is snappy, and focus breathing is also minimal. Tamron has made great strides to improve the overall look of the bokeh in this lens, something which was much maligned in the original version. It has the best magnification of any lens in this article at 0.37x, compared to the Sigma's 0.34x magnification.
