About this deal

This Ultra HD Blu-raypresentation is, reportedly for licensing reasons, identical to the Japanese April 2020 release from Bandai, supervised by director Katsuhiro Otomo, delivering a stunningly vibrant native 4K image whose painstaking restoration process unfortunately does not come without some drawbacks, ones which are potentially deal-breaking for many long-time fans.

Director Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s 1988 adaptation of his own 1982 manga, Akira, is considered one of the greatest film ever made if only for its influence on all the post-apocalyptic cyberpunk stories to come. The Akira Committee was the name given to a partnership of several major Japanese entertainment companies brought together to realize production of an Akira film. Fine detail is improved over the previous Blu-ray release, although some DNR has been applied to smooth out uneven grain and minimize cell dirt.Chris Beveridge comments on the Japanese audio, which brings "the forward soundstage nicely into play when required. The group's assembly was necessitated by the unconventionally high starting budget of around ¥500,000,000, intended to achieve the desired epic standard equal to Otomo's over 2,000-page manga tale. Sure getting Funimation to swap the 4K disk for one with HDR is a bit of a pain, but for an unparalleled experience, pick it up. The drama inherent in Testsuo struggle to control the power becomes even more grotesque with the enhanced color.

Rian Johnson Talks Working with Joseph Gordon-Levitt on LOOPER, Hollywood's Lack of Originality, Future Projects and More". The film also made number 16 on Time Out 's top 50 animated movie list [121] and number 5 on the Total Film Top 50 Animated Films list. Cam Clarke and Johnny Yong Bosch (top to bottom) voiced Kaneda in the first and second English dub of the film, respectively.

Sure, even ardent fans may still be haunted by some of the particularly irritating English dub vocals chosen for the lead duo (Tetsuo! Otomo is claimed to have filled 2,000 pages of notebooks, containing various ideas and character designs for the film, but the final storyboard consisted of a trimmed-down 738 pages.

For some people, Akira was their first exposure to the world of Japanese animation—or at least consciously so, since they may have watched TV shows like Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, or Star Blazers without realizing that all of them were adaptations of Japanese originals. While average animation fans may not run toward an essay of this manner, those who have been longtime fans of Akira will find much to appreciate and consider. Overall, this is Akira's definitive home release and shows off what makes this movie so special like never before. Both versions used the Japanese audio with English subtitles, so you’d expect some aspects of the experience to be the same.
