About this deal

Alfie gets out and about in the garden with Dad, in this glorious book about growing, playing and sharing. The illustrations are extremely intricate and allow the reader to empathise with the characters which makes the story extremely memorable.

Dogger was a particular favourite in our household, with myself and my siblings able to relate to the attachment to a much loved soft toy, and understanding Dave’s feelings when Dogger goes missing. With Alfie getting into his house without his mother and sister, he showed that he doesn’t need their help, and even opened the door himself. She can’t wait to go there with him " in fact she’s so desperate to join in that she gets Alfie into a very sticky situation in this collection of nursery school tales. If only these gorgeous books were more available - I would have bought a whole set for my boys when little. She focuses on small moments of everyday childhood life, be that a birthday party, losing a toy, going to the seaside, making new friends; Hughes captures the beauty in our quotidien lives as children through her colourful, detailed drawings. Young children are able to find the extraordinary in every day ordinary scenes, like losing a beloved stuffed animal, helping your baby sister eat with her spoon, and going to a friend's birthday party. On one special day, he and his best friend, Bernard, make birthday surprises for a very, very old lady. One of the many joys of being a grandmother is re-visiting the books you read to your child, in reading them to their child! For teachers, it is important to have a discussion along with this book about how Alfie got himself into the situation and thinking about your actions before doing them.

Once again, Hughes’ vivid paintings bring the story to life, illustrating the Selkie wife’s sadness at being kept from her true home in the sea, and her husband’s anguish when she tricks him to escape. I love all of Shirley Hughes books, they are extremely personable, yet a light hearted read for both children and adults. One of the few books I've come across showing siblings behvaing amiably towards each other on a regular basis. I did like that I was about a family, and it had an issue that would more than likely happen to a child, as it did with Alfie. Alfie was so excited to be the first one into the house after their walk, that he slammed the door shut. It's a leisurely visit with siblings Alfie and baby Annie Rose; he teaches her to feed herself, and she rewards him cruelly: the very first name she learns to say is that of his friend Bernard. It doesn't have to be the official age rating (although that would help too), but if you're someone who reads to children (maybe a parent, teacher, aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc. Shirley Hughes has won the Other Award, the Eleanor Farjeon Award, and the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration twice, for Dogger in 1977 and for Ella's Big Chance in 2003. This delightful tale has a clever (sometimes not-s0-clever) child who finds the best ways to get into mischief.
