About this deal

As I mentioned above, there are certainly (a few) elements here to recommend this novel, but I wasn't overwhelmed by them, and the novel just simply does not hold together enough in my opinion. But wow, was not expecting the book to go that way but was surprised at the plot and the writing style. Helping him is his investigative reporter girlfriend, Lana, and although Jack shouldn’t have told anyone about what he was doing, Lana has a way of finding out anything she puts her mind to. If you don’t have the patience to finish The Lie, or if you were confused by the ending, you’ve come to the right place.

Full of suspense, it managed to SURPRISE me more than once, and it had an adrenaline finish like one you might find in the movie theater! His girlfriend Lana, who is a reporter, is curious and tries to uncover details of Jack’s new assignment. Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan. Seemingly unrelated, Lana is also busy looking into two separate incidents of the disappearance and subsequent deaths of a retired judge and a surgeon of a local hospital, initially presumed to be suicides but the circumstances of their deaths indicate otherwise. As this impeccable and finely wrought literary tale winds to a chilling conclusion, readers will themselves be haunted by its evocative portrayal of a life-defining friendship and loss.

Our narrators are Lucy, Carrie and Rose, so we know that Rose is somewhat different from her public image. Set in France during the First World War and in post-war Cornwall, this is a deeply moving and mesmerizing story of the "men who marched away". It didn’t even present one iota of being over-the-top, which, given the mind-altering shift in facts, was truly a feat. This might have been a veiled warning about what will follow, but is actually the first lie in the book; occult historian Francis King has carefully determined the date on the imprint is inaccurate by at least a year.

Dunmore allows glimpses of hope and redemption, even as the inevitable consequences of Daniel's lie begin to close in on him. She seems to instinctively know how best to structure a plot to conceal the twist from the reader and she fools me EVERY TIME. BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Is it possible that Daniel lied because he felt survivor’s guilt and wanted a reason to be punished, perhaps wanted to die as he feels he should have in the war? We see subsequent events from the perspectives of Jacob's mother Lucy and Rose's mother Carrie, with a bit of flashback from Rose herself.
