In fact, she is only a she because David decides it would be easier to assign her a gender than for Matthew to be confused all the time about which pronouns to use when discussing her. John Wyndham’s late novel Chocky, published in 1968, just one year before his death (although it was based on a novelette published five years earlier), ponders this latter question. It’s not terribly unusual for a boy to have an imaginary friend, but Matthew’s parents have to agree that his—nicknamed Chocky—is anything but ordinary. It is unclear at first whether Chocky is a boy or a girl, and David’s attempts to find out result in unclear responses.

Fortunately, the doctor David invites to his home hits it off with Matthew and when the two are left alone, Matthew opens up and tells the doctor all about Chocky. The Midwich Cuckoos was certainly a graphic metaphor for the fear of unwanted pregnancies as experienced by the teenage girls of that pre–birth-control era.

We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there? While Chocky is ‘with’ Matthew, he can do things he struggles to do as himself: paint beautiful pictures, or swim powerfully, the latter feat being achieved so that ‘Matthew’ (or Chocky) can rescue Matthew’s sister Polly from drowning. That is how it has come to install itself inside the head of young Matthew, 11 years old and hitherto unremarkable. David and Mary are not overly worried about their son having an imaginary friend until their son begins to act strangely and asks questions that are much more advanced than his eleven years.

And I think John Wyndham is sadly underrated – he wrote a number of excellent books, many of which were way ahead of their time.

Some years back, ten-year-old daughter Polly created friend Piff, but fortunately for all concerned, habitual nuisance Piff departed as quickly as she arrived. I thought I knew all of Wyndham’s science fiction adventures-- The Day of the Triffids, The Kraken Wakes, The Chrysalids, The Midwich Cuckoos--but this one—his last—had previously escaped my notice. Back in the early 1980’s I devoured every Wyndham I could get my hands on after seeing the 1962 movie version of The Day of the Triffids.

This is a fairly short novel so I don't want to say much more about the plot but will say is that it’s not difficult to work out what is going on. As for the "Chocky" book itself, it is narrated by David Gore, a husband of some 15 years as well as a father to two kids: his 12-year-old adopted son Matthew, and 10-year-old daughter Polly.I'm not going into the full context here but it's an incredible question when I think about it on a par with "What came first , the chicken or the egg? During World War II, he worked in the Ministry of Information before serving in the army, and took part in the Normandy landings. Re-Birth ( The Chrysalids) was one of the first science fiction novels I read as a youth, and several times tempted me to take a piggy census. This quirky alien-meets-boy story “remains fresh and disturbing in an entirely unexpected way”—for fans of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time ( The Guardian). While the 1968 novel was set in an unspecified 'near future', the TV adaptation was set contemporaneously in the mid-1980s in Surrey.

Wyndham] was responsible for a series of eerily terrifying tales of destroyed civilisations; created several of the twentieth century’s most imaginative monsters; and wrote a handful of novels that are rightly regarded as modern classics. She has come to say goodbye, because her presence has attracted undue attention to Matthew, and the powers that be want to get hold of Chocky and her superior scientific knowledge. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Then, when Matthew does something incredible, it seems there is more than the imaginary about Chocky. I think it’s also significant that Matthew is twelve, poised on the brink of adolescence, and that Chocky is female. The conversations that Matthew has with Chocky are increasingly sophisticated and conceptually beyond that of a typical teenage boy. You should be employing your resources, while you still have them, to tap and develop the use of a source of power which is not finite…. Mildly intriguing things happen but nothing that astounds, while reading the book I sat firmly in my seat without moving anywhere near the edge of it.
