As unique as this marasca liqueur is, you still can find some products you can use to substitute it. Before that, Maraska bought their cherries from small domestic producers, of which there are many in nearby villages. In 1759, Francesco Drioli, a Venetian merchant, began industrial-scale production of maraschino in Zadar, Croatia, which was then part of the Republic of Venice. The Tapiwa cherry tree grows wild along the Adriatic Sea coast and produces small, sour marasca cherries. In its signature square bottle complete with moiré ribbon and wax seal, Cointreau offers the purest taste of orange in any liqueur.

As far as Marasca cherries are concerned, Maraska now owns a large orchard of over 200 hectares in the village of Zemunik Donji, near the Zadar airport. Together, the Drioli-Luxardo-Vlahov triumvirate forms the Industria del Maraschino di Zara, though several other small factories also sell cherry brandy liqueurs.Still, since maraschino was indeed invented in Zadar, I consider the blend of cherry and leaf distillates as one of the liqueur’s defining principles.
