As others have noted, Danny Kaye is totally bearable and the kitsch side of the film is now enjoyable for that. Thumbelina" was completely Andersen's creation although inspired by " Tom Thumb" and other stories of miniature people. Altogether, he wrote around a 160 tales, which were publishedin eight volumesfrom 1835 to 1848 and have been translated into over 120 languages. A bragging beetle sees the world, marries and leaves a beetle wife, and draws his own conclusions about the world and his place in it. Hans Christian Andersen: My Life as a Fairytale (2003), a British made-for-television film directed by Philip Saville, a fictionalized account of Andersen's early successes, with his fairy stories intertwined with events in his own life.
