About this deal

This was author Bella Mackie's debut fiction book and I look forward to listening to this author's future titles. On her quest to kill we meet an array of characters and begin to understand why she chose such a dark path.

How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie | Goodreads

This is a very interesting review but I could not help but think of the title “Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone” by Benjamin Stevenson (March 2022). Outrageously funny, compulsive and subversive, perfect for fans of Killing Eve and My Sister, the Serial Killer.I’m get the impression the author was trying to be funny, in a darkly humourous way, and didn’t pull it off. It’s neither a thriller nor really a domestic drama, but the diary of one very churlish individual littered with judgemental stereotypes. Because you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but everybody does that ‘cause the cover is always a big deal! The novel follows Grace Bernard on a quest to get revenge against her father and her family - Grace is, frankly, so immediately unlikable and snobbish that I almost didn’t keep going past the first chapter. After all, almost nobody else in the world can possibly understand how someone, by the tender age of 28, can have calmly killed six members of her family.

Grace is on a revenge mission, taking out every one of her estranged upper class family to settle a score and inherit the family wealth. As this is such a 'hot read' on multiple bestseller lists I felt kind of bad for my non popular view, only to see that the Goodreads rating is actually just 3. Now she's in jail for something she hasn't done and, the icing on the cake, she left evidence of what nobody else knows has happened.Perhaps this assertion in the prologue is true, but having spent eighteen chapters immersed in Grace’s head, I came pretty close to understanding just how she did it. The novel’s protagonist, 28-year-old Grace Bernard, sets off on a mission to eliminate all members of her family with an end-goal of seeking revenge on her father, millionaire businessman and stereotypical playboy who abandoned her and her mother as a baby. Do an absolute Gone Girl on it … she [Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn] hasn’t written anything since 2012.

There are some sharp, uncharitable bits of humour which can make you laugh out loud, After the half way mark I have to say I could not put this down and I'm nursing some huge eyebags today from a late night with it! Grace is an intriguing character who at times, the reader can only admire for her gumption, drive and unapologetic cruelty. Those who hated the ending are forgetting how ridiculously silly Grace was for not thinking of these things. She is quite proud of the fact that she got away with it-so when she ends up in jail, accused of a murder she didn’t commit-she decides to brag about the ones she is guilty of committing-by writing about them in a journal that she hopes someone will find locked in a safe, one day after she is dead and buried.I’m glad I did though, because while Grace is, yes, unlikable, she’s also hilarious and smart and surprisingly talented at committing serious crimes.

Bella Mackie ‘It’s a fantasy, no woman is allowed to be like

How to Kill Your Family is the first-person narrative of Grace Bernard, a young woman who has waged a campaign of hatred against a millionaire and his family. Although most of them were absolutely terrible people, they felt so vivid and I did want to know what happened to them. Nobody had ever taken me on a first date where they booked dinner, to a nice restaurant, like a grown up. No novel is ever perfect, especially for a hyper critical English student such as myself, but here let me focus on all that was enjoyable about this novel.one of the main themes of the book was about class, but it wasn’t really discussed in any profound way, and it actually became quite trite after a while. Grace may not be a sympathetic character, but she was oddly relatable and I was happy to go along for the ride as she dispatched one victim after another. It’s not as though she was desperate for another husband but “when Greg came along, I thought ‘you are great, I am going to nail this down’, because he’s on the radio, people like him, I thought I better lock it down now … it’s quite easy to get a divorce when you don’t own anything together but now we have a dog and a house. The narrator's voice, even if her actions are so morally questionable, makes the reading go by quickly and even empathising with her. Grace Bernard, our 'damaged heroine' is taking revenge on the father and super-rich family who never acknowledged her.
