About this deal

They have often said that African footballers can't handle cold conditions—and, though strictly speaking you are British, you feel an urge to represent Uganda tonight. Ihr Vater, ein libertärer Tech-Unternehmer, hat die Seestatt als Rettung vor dem Chaos entworfen, in dem die übrige Welt versinkt. He’s abused by racists online and in the street, and his freelance journalism doesn’t always pay the bills. The lack of money—that is your fault, your choice: you could have had a stable career, but instead you chose to make your way as an artist. Figures from the Office for National Statistics and Relate show that by 2039, one in seven people in the UK will be living alone and today only one in six people believe in “the one”.

He tells his agent that the rumours are true — he wrote the story without considering Ae-jeong’s feelings. As she speaks, your conversation reaching far into the early hours of the next morning, you slowly begin to understand that maybe the most important work you will ever do is the work you didn't notice, the type you did while you were running off somewhere obsessed with seeing your name on some imaginary bookshelf or festival billboard.Sometimes this left me longing for the connective tissue between the episodes; sometimes it seemed this was perhaps precisely what the narrator was longing for – each episode somehow as lonely an island as he. With the world as a whole more uncertain, as both the far-right and global temperatures rise at frightening speed, he finds himself fighting a fierce inner battle against his turbulent past, for a future free of his fear of failure, of persecution, and of intimacy. But it’s also a mark of the heart-swelling intimacy Okwonga generates that, on finishing the book, I was left hoping he hadn’t had too rough a lockdown this past year. finale was always going to be a wrapping up job and episode 16 proved just that, making it as sweet as possible.

I have a great interest in Berlin, and am also keen to enlarge my reading of authors of colour, so this was a serendipitous find at my local library. There are a lot of pleasures in this book: the sentence by sentence quality, the intimate and engaging voice, the evocation of Berlin and its social life, the fluid structure (and, by the way , the lovely small-format production by Rough Trade Books). There is the constant doubt about having chosen the life of an artist who will never have the financial security the narrator yearns for, even as he refuses on moral principle to make choices to achieve such security. A short one lent to me by my law student… nothing super radical but just a very honest and relatable story of loneliness and longing and growth and identity.Okwonga's words cut deep into the heart to leave an indelible mark that becomes part of the reader, shaking the soul.

We would have trials and then go for a drink at the pub with all the trialists to see what they’re like. This really is the last roll of the dice to keep these two apart in the finale — the K-drama series could not help itself. The few of you who make it to training are notably proud of yourselves, and the snow has the decency to wait until you have finished to flood the playing field. For the first few months you are in Berlin you are largely invisible, or at least as invisible as a dark-skinned black man in an overwhelmingly white city can be.
