About this deal

And just before I started this, I was essentially working as a business consultant, helping people with different projects and different elements of their business. The resulting distillation is “a celebration of the life and legacy of the original ‘King of Soho,’ Howard’s father, Paul Raymond. Plus, it’s not just the teensy tiny production that makes Highwayman Gin one of the most unique gin tastings in London. King of Soho is made in the heart of London by Howard Raymond, son of Paul Raymond, the property tycoon who helped revolutionise Soho and make it the wonderful centre for culture it is today. Soft juniper with a high presence of citrus botanicals including grapefruit peel is balanced by angelica root and cassia. It helps us understand the number of visitors, where the visitors are coming from, and the pages they navigate. But we named it after Paul because it fitted our mood at that time, and I don’t think people would recognize the name Dr Robson, would they?Graveney Gin is just the small-batch London gin distillery that Tooting needed – even if it didn’t know it. Considering that Christopher is a fifth-generation London gin producer, we’re certainly not about to disagree with him.

Strawberries and cream give way to a subtle floral tone on the finish with a pronounced tang of grapefruit. Consequently, it’s pretty unsurprising that The King of Soho, a gin inspired by the history of Soho and all the people who made it such a legendary London spot, has become a popular choice among our Balans regulars. But, history should be respected for what it is – it can’t be erased, cancelled or changed, although many try to do so. Add eldelflower cordial, lemon juice and sparkling water, cucumber and rosemary for garnish - perfection! If you want to learn more about Hayman’s methods and sample some delicious gin (and of course you do!

But as you and I know, it’s very difficult to implement it without being fully aware of the rules, which is why the plans are there. Created by business partners Alex Robson and Howard Raymond, the idea was “sparked by an epiphany late one night over a classic gin cocktail, the pair set about creating a high quality and beautifully designed spirit. It sort of shows your entrepreneurial spirit and your adaptability in what is an extremely difficult environment, and that has to be respected, you know? Before gin became the tipple of choice for stylish Londoners, it was feared it would be the downfall of society as the Georgians knew it. London has had a long love affair with gin – no surprise then that there are a tonne of cool gin distilleries, tours and experiences in the city.

Alex explains that the family-orientated and personal side to the brand helps sustain their passion and the King of Soho’s authenticity. And that was very important to us to create a delicious, beautiful liquid in a bold and colourful bottle that represented the things that were unique to Soho and Soho life. She asserts that it’s not all exciting in business, but if you don’t get the regularities right, it can be a costly derailment to your plans – a business analysis, considering rules and mandatories are essential. Paul Raymond ‘The King of Soho' was an entertainment and property tycoon who, from the 1950s onwards, played a pivotal role in the cultural and social liberation of British society. If you really love gin and want to try even more delicious concoctions, try the Craft Gin Club– they deliver great gin straight to your door.

So there’s a bit of serendipity there which I quite liked at the beginning – slightly fated, perhaps? It would take centuries for London to shake off its bad gin-related hangover, and it wasn’t really until the late 2000s that people started taking London gin seriously again.

Coming from a business-savvy family, Alex always knew that she wanted to go into business, explaining that from a young age she has always been fueled by a burning entrepreneurial spirit. And then I ended up in Holland, where I did supply chain management, which sounds a bit boring, but has become incredibly useful with the gin, as you can imagine. Here are some great tours which will take you under the surface and introduce you to some of London’s best gin experiences.
