About this deal

The stories are told by an older sister, and I like the funny way they show the new responsibility of having a younger sister, because even though we all love our younger brother and sisters, we all know they can be a real pain sometimes too. To my great joy she liked them enough to ask Methuen to commission me to re-illustrate all the Naughty Little Sister stories retrospectively. I was very sorry to see my little sister crying, and I was disappointed because I didn't want a crying little sister very much, but I went and looked at her. Even when she was a cross and noisy baby with a screamy red face, Mrs Jones would be kind and smily to her, and say, \"There's a duckie, then,\" to her. My little sister turned it and turned it, and lots of shiny lights came out of it in all directions.

And the back gate was shut, and the side gate was shut, and the fence was still too high for her to climb over. Father and Mother and Mrs Clarke laughed and laughed and laughed - they were so glad my naughty little sister hadn't swallowed the ring after all!At the very end, Granny broke a lot of eggs into a basin; then she held the mixer while my sister turned the handle to beat them up. He had put some sacks in front of the barrow over the prickly leaves, and my little sister climbed on and sat down, and off they went. Then, when some of the teachers came round with bags of sweets, tied up in pretty coloured paper, my little sister smiled even more, and she sang too when all the children sang. Granny poured all the currants out on to the table and my sister looked to see if there were any stalky bits left in them.

First published in the 1950s, Dorothy Edwards' much-loved My Naughty Little Sisterbooks were inspired by memories of her own sister, and will particularly resonate with older siblings. Granny said, \"This little girl and I think Bonfire Night is the best time of all for making Christmas puddings. She kept them up to date by being a passionate user of a sketchbook in which she made quick drawings – “almost at the speed of seeing” – capturing children and settings for her stories, from which she would then create characters who are attractively wholesome without being overly sentimental.Talk about creating a self-fulfilling prophecy and it sure didn’t feel like there would ever be camaraderie between the siblings based on the narrator always tattling on the younger sister.
