BUT (as it’s pointed out in comments) this story could have been fed to Erin (who is rather naive and impressionable) by Brooke. At the same time, themes include pedophilia, alcoholism, and physical and emotional abuse, so it is not a fun read. Even Jewell herself has said her thrillers follow a general trend: now and then timelines, unlikable characters, at LEAST one teenage POV. The story behind Walter was left vague for me and didn’t conclude on the various aspects of his life and actions.

I simply could not leave it alone, and had to keep reading until I'd reached the heart-stopping conclusion. All is revealed when Alix becomes the subject of a true crime podcast to be featured in a Netflix documentary in 2020. Was Josie’s plan to confess to Alix about covering up Brooke’s murder (she does present this idea to Walter, but he rejects the idea.

One of them is Alix Summers; famous podcaster promoting aspiring women who take their second changes for life to achieve bigger things. The supporting cast of narrators that lent their gifted voices to the ‘podcasts’ were phenomenal as well! As the birthday celebrations get underway, a chance encounter between Josie and Alix reveals they not only share the same birth date, but they were also born in the same hospital, on the same day, and went to the same school.

This is a most involving thriller, and it is difficult to determine characters' motivations and how their lives really are. And it was literally as I was writing those last few paragraphs, when her mind starts wheeling backwards in time and she’s remembering what happened on that particular night, I suddenly saw it. Josie's life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can't quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. By the time Alix feels unease, Josie has wormed her way into Alix’s life and home, with repercussions that are unforeseeable and devastating.
