I started something similar with Outgunned, but found it wasn’t as necessary with a single narrator; there was less risk of a particular plot thread getting lost or character fading into the background. I loved the mysteries and intrigues featured within this story, and they blended extremely well with the more combat orientated aspects of the plot and the unique character interactions that Flowers included. The powerful link he has to these skulls ensures that his mind is often split between different perspectives, and he often views the world through these robotic eyes. Picts also serve as recruitment tools, with viewers aspiring to enlist and become dashing fighter aces. So if you happen to run into me feel free to ask how the gym is going so I can shuffle my feet awkwardly before throwing a smoke bomb and fleeing. Propagandist Kile Simlex is tasked with producing a cinema-pict that shows the heroic Flight Commander Lucille Von Shard in the face of the greenskin threat, but the war is in shambles, Shard is an arrogant misanthrope, and the clouds of Bacchus hide a lot of orks. Simlex has lofty aspirations for the pict, envisioning it as his magnum opus, featuring the fearless Flight Commander Lucille von Shard’s victory over craven ork invaders. Not because of a desire for glory and fame (though that certainly is a driving force too), but because somewhere under his neuroses and insecurities is a spark of goodness, and an unwillingness to look the other way. At the same time, a mysterious sickness is destroying the planet itself, while its governor is determined to downplay the war no matter the cost. The author wove some brilliant layers into this impressive read, and I loved the incredible characters, memorable setting and fascinating Warhammer elements that enhanced the clever story. As the war progresses and Simlex struggles with his pict, his observations show the orks for the terrifying enemy that they are and highlight the flaws and foibles of the Imperial forces – not least Bacchus’ feckless nobility, clinging to their old priorities in the midst of disaster – offering a fascinating comparison of the relative strengths of the forces at play. That way the narrator could marvel at the events in a manner that would be odd for a fighter ace already immersed in the world.
