About this deal

This quotation is unexpectedly poignant, commenting on the elements of Harri's environment that breed gang violence. As retribution, Harri shows off the remote control car Auntie Sonia gave him, refusing to give Jordan a turn. About a third of the way in I just starting skipping the pigeon's narrative portions (which is easily done as they appear in italics).

The play is a co-commission between Bristol Old Vic Young Company and National Youth Theatre, and is directed by Miranda Cromwell.

The pigeon remarks that the dead boy "wasn't mine," indicating that, by contrast, Harri's belief that he and the pigeon share a special connection is true. We ask only for the same rights as you: we just want to live our lives, make a place for ourselves, room to shit and room sleep, room to raise our children. The novel opens with Harri observing a local crime scene, where a young boy who Harri knows from the neighborhood had been murdered outside of Chicken Joe’s with no apparent motive.

And in this book, 11-year-old Harrison (aka "Harri") Opoku is such a lovable, naive, child that I couldn't help but connect with his irrepressible spirit. Harri was such a little charmer, so innocent and unaware of the very violent surroundings he and his family were living in. As Harri and Dean reenact detective procedurals, the Dell Farm Crew, the main gang at Harri's school, offers Harri a chance to join their ranks. Kelman reveals in the end Acknowledgements, that the story is based on a real-life kid growing up in the projects. I spat out the rest of my Atomic Apple Hubba Bubba for if I swallowed it by mistake and my guts all got stuck together. As Harri lies on the ground clutching his stab wound, a pigeon comes toward him and says that Harri will be “going home soon. Some of these themes and setting are similar to Peter Akinti's recent book Forest Gate, albeit with a very different tone. I didn't care for the absolute jumpiness of the story, written as though the narrator was on something and in somewhat hyper text pieces that were interjected. Harri's neighborhood watches in silence as the playground burns after the Dell Farm Crew set fire to it. I should have known that reading a book in a language other than my own would be difficult; I speak American Southern English and this is written in London slang English.

He is now living in England with his mother and sister; his father, grandmother and baby sister left behind until the family can afford for them to come also. The book became a bestseller, and has featured in a national campaign launched by the National Literacy Trust and the Booker Prize Foundation to encourage prisoners to read. That inherent unreliability makes fictional children appealing vehicles for dramatic irony, protagonist-witnesses of a story of which they have only a partial understanding, whose gaps in knowledge and comprehension mirror their readers' experience and occasionally leave us terrified in the face of their ignorance. Kelman has done enough here that I am pretty certain I will be interested in his future work, but Pigeon English feels like exactly what it is: the debut novel of a young author. I see him now, writing his book review, convinced his opinion has any bearing on the great scheme of things.Kelman has created some loveable characters but sadly, I could feel no sympathy towards any of them.

Kelman, who grew up in the housing projects of Luton, England, is writing this novel in light of the surge of stabbings andknife violence happening in England. In the end, this is a beautifully crafted and convincing narrative which unfortunately feels incomplete without another voice, another perspective, or a properly conclusive ending. Auntie Sonia later tells Harri that she burns off her fingerprints to avoid getting caught by the police and deported. Despite her fear of the Dell Farm Crew's retribution, Lydia protects Harri as best she can, despite being a child herself. In a violent, gritty council estate, Harri struggles to get through the days, trying to solve the murder of a boy with his best friend, Dean; everybody is afraid to speak to the police, and the police, I sense, are afraid of going into the area.As readers learn almost from the outset, a boy from Harrison's school was murdered and left for dead in the street recently. You can mend a mistake but on purpose doesn’t just break you, it breaks the whole world bit by bit like the scissors on the rock.
