About this deal

Third, instead of mirroring Splendor's 15-point threshold for bringing about the end of the game, Splendor Duel gives you three victory conditions — 10 points in a single color, 20 points total, or 10 crowns — and as soon as you meet one of them, you win. Like in ‘Splendor’, item cards in ‘Splendor Duel’ add a deck-building element to the game, and the trade-off between prioritising point, crown, and gem cards adds an extra layer to game play.

To reserve a card, a player simply needs to take a face-up development from the middle of the table or (if you’re feeling lucky) draw the first card from one of the three decks (level ◯;◯◯;◯◯◯) without showing it to the other players. There’s also a victory tile that reminds you of the 3 ways in which you can claim victory, so best keep that in eyeline.A player may purchase one of the face-up development cards in the middle of the table or a card in their hand that was reserved on a previous turn. I hope this little guide helps you work out if this is a game for you, as well as holds your hand through your first game. However, its variable player count keeps it from using any “special” rules for two players, such as the alternate win conditions and direct attacks found in 7 Wonders Duel. This means that players will have to switch strategies or simply wait until the board is refilled once again – which, whilst being a free action, also gives your opponent more options as well as yourself. As in the original Splendor, players can only take one gold jewel at a time, alongside reserving a card to purchase, meaning that acquiring the jewel tokens you want is a lot trickier this time around.

You are a renowned jeweller, a master of your craft, and unquestionably the finest lapidary in the land… or so you thought, until someone started stealing your business! Fans of Splendor will recognize key aspects of the original game: Renaissance jewels theme, high-quality components, and card/token acquisition mechanics to increase prestige. Splendor Duel is a two-player only standalone game based on Splendor that retains some of the main gameplay mechanisms of that design, while being a bit more complex, dynamic, interactive, rich, tense, and mean. By 2014, I had already begun reviewing board games, and I likewise remember playing five games in a row of Splendor with my wife, pregnant at the time with our first child. The vicious nature of Splendor Duel is a marker for its success however, with the two-player game embodying everything that makes a head-to-head experience so unique and enjoyable.

Crowns help players earn the loyalty of nobles (who give the player points and special abilities) and can also bring the player closer to victory. Splendor Duel’ maintains the high standard of artwork and pieces seen in the original, and many of the popular mechanisms seen in ‘Splendor’ have been caried through well. Another new addition to the title is cards with multiple characteristic and varied abilities that will trigger additional rounds, bonus tokens, and more. With 2 players: 3 tokens of each gem color except gold are removed (there should be only 4 of each remaining).

Furthermore, the box is extremely compact, and would easily fit inside the original base game box, along with the base game, and its expansion, Cities of Splendor. Whilst the original restricts the number of jewels players can take depending on whether they match – you can take either two of the same or three of different types – Splendor Duel enforces restrictions in other, more challenging ways.In many instances, these technologies are reliant on cookies to function properly, and so declining cookies will impair their functioning.
