About this deal

If you are a first-time reader of Peter Robinson’s DCI Alan Banks criminal procedurals, you might be forgiven for thinking that a connection between an unsolved murder in 1980 and the discovery of a body in 2019 will be made through diligent police investigation. The solution to the mystery, while not completely unexpected, still managed to surprise me in many of its details. It’s a pro forma conversation but it later emerges that Gillespie was a former policeman who retired at a high rank.

After getting his BA Honours Degree in English Literature at the University of Leeds, he came to Canada and took his MA in English and Creative Writing at the University of Windsor, with Joyce Carol Oates as his tutor, then a PhD in English at York University. Right after the reading as I was halfway through my pint, Robinson came over to say hello to my neighbours and then asked if he could sit at the spare chair of my table! In 2012, through his work, he comes into contact with an old university acquaintance, who tells him something he didn’t know about Alice’s boyfriend. The story starts with Grace Hutchinson who works for the Northern Archaeological Associates who is there digging at the dig site. He described in one interview how he spent the lively summer of 1965 “with his ear glued to his transistor radio and his eyes on the passing girls”.The book itself was a 4 Star but I give 5 stars for the whole series, now sadly ended as the author passed away last year. Standing in the Shadows is the 28th book in the DCI Banks police procedural series by Peter Robinson. I don't know whether Robinson realized that this might be his last novel about Banks, but whether he did or not this book rather neatly sums up Banks' career and shows him, after many ups and downs, in a good place in his work and his personal life.
