About this deal

I bought a hundred 6ft chestnut stakes and quartered them (chestnut cleaves beautifully down the grain) to make 400. Now, he travels across America with celebrated photographer Derry Moore to trace the fascinating histories of outdoor spaces which epitomize or redefine the American garden. Monty's tour begins in a new area for herbs, topiary and box, before reaching the Lime Walk, his daily route into the main garden. A.D since before it had a name, this book has given me a reset and removed some angst in regard to how I view myself. He looks just enough rough on the edges to make him interesting, but he can touch a flower like it were a lady's cheek, and when he speaks, ah when he speaks, and says something like, "and look at the lovely lush, blushing pink of this dahlia.

He wrote this book with his wife, Sarah, and I must say I enjoyed her contributions as much as I did Monty’s . However being only the most amateur of gardeners the latter half became like an endless list of plants for me and I struggled a bit to finish the book, which bridges two genres, autobiography and gardening. It proved to be the perfect diversion from a winter storm outside my window that was adding layers of ice to my trees and bushes every hour. When light hits the large, green, paddle-like leaves, it brings out their contrasting mahogany veining and margins, to dramatic effect. This is a brief précis of what is a marvellous book, that details their trials and successes in life and business, but also really interesting details of their planting, which to me as a gardener are sheer magic. Beautifully produced book full of glossy photographs, a joy for any gardener to hold and leaf through.

Tour of Longmeadow with Monty Don | BBC Gardeners World Magazine

I read the whole book in under four hours and felt a great feeling of understanding and comfort by the descriptions of the changing seasons and the nature and countryside around them, towards the end it definitely feels like a piece of escapism, but an honest one. The next stage [here Don describes his depression progressing through a series of stages] is that this ‘normal’ world feels as though it is resting on this ice that hides unimaginable depths. The face of British gardening Monty Don and his wife Sarah tell the magical story of the garden they built at Longmeadow. I also wish there had been more pictures although it was great that the ones in the book were in color. But over the past ten years it has slowly evolved into a traditional, but essentially floral, cottage garden, filled with blowsy, soft colours but also containing fruit trees, rhubarb, gooseberries and some herbs all mingled in together. It is also the season of fruitfulness with the orchard providing over 50 different varieties of apples and the vegetable garden offering its final rich summer harvest.
