About this deal

headphone jack, and dedicated dual-SIM slots (both 5G) with space for a microSD card up to 512GB in capacity as well. However, the Redmi Note 9T has a plastic frame and back which, despite having a textured finish, doesn’t feel as premium as other 5G handsets sitting at the pricier end of the scale. While it doesn’t sport the most attractive design, with an all-plastic body and some rather hefty dimensions, the Redmi Note 9 proves easy enough to wield. You don’t get the Snapdragon 665 CPU that key rivals such as the Moto G8 do, or even last year’s Redmi Note 8T for that matter, which is a bit of a downer.

Yes, you can fish around in the settings menu to switch off this annoying feature, but we really shouldn’t have to. However, the Redmi 9A gets about 3 hours more out of the 5,000 mAh battery with almost identical hardware. It’s a brute-force approach that results in the phone’s rather chunky dimensions, but it pays off handsomely. The IPS panel is less bright and has a lower contrast, and the Redmi 9AT's battery life is also significantly lower than that of its counterpart.

Unless you’re an out-and-out power user or a total media hound (and if you are then this probably isn’t the phone for you anyway), you’ll get through two full days of use in between charges. In our more realistic APL50 measurement, which simulates an even distribution of bright and dark areas on the LC display, brightness reaches 375 cd/m². As you can see from the image sample below, the Redmi Note 9T did a tremendous job of picking out intricate details of the London skyline at sunset, capturing tree foliage, skyscraper window reflections, roof tiles and the like with impressive clarity.Performance and design compromises mean that it’s not an outright winner, but showing strength in a number of areas where the Moto G8 fails makes it a viable alternative.

Cheaper products may seem like a good deal at the time, but they are often made with lower-quality materials and are not designed to last as long. Now, an "improved" version of the Xiaomi smartphone bearing the designation "9AT" is going through our test course. Opting for the Saturated display mode gives colours a little more pop, although the difference isn’t anywhere near as pronounced as on Xiaomi’s OLED-packing devices such as the Poco F2 Pro.

Chances are you’re stuck at home at the moment but if you do venture out then it should comfortably last a full day without needing a top-up. Our review of the Redmi smartphone also reveals some unexpected differences compared with the Redmi 9A. Oh, and one final note to Xiaomi and every other manufacturer that chooses to slap a branded watermark on every photo by default: stop. This is particularly important for products that are used for tasks such as gaming, video editing, or graphic design. cd/m² is visibly worse than that of the Redmi 9A, resulting in different contrast values for the panels as well.
