This means that I won’t spend too much time on the switches that were in my board (seeing as you can just get the ones you like) but just to be quick: the board I tested has Kailh Red switches, and I’m not a big fan. I’ve never had any issues with a (quality) mechanical keyboard feeling laggy or unresponsive so don’t get this board thinking you’ll be half a second faster on the draw than your enemy because that simply will not be the case. When milliseconds decide whether you win or lose, the CHERRY MX Speed Silver keeps you ahead of the competition. While I appreciate the gesture and the desire to bring these features to mass-produced boards, I have to say that there’s some work to be done here. This attaches to the board via a magnet and can as such be replaced too, but I find this to be a bit more finnicky than the top frame swap system.

On one of my testing boards, the space bar even didn’t come all the way up after using it, which is of course not what you want.If you ask me, this foam should be denser: that would prevent it from folding or bending and would do better at noise dampening. The K5 Speed Silver edition comes with CHERRY MX Speed Silver switches – the fastest model of the CHERRY MX switch family in full height, and the best-selling switch in Xtrfy’s Custom Keyboard Builder. If you’d ever like to change them, they’re hot-swappable so you can easily replace them with any compatible MX-style switches – no soldering required. I’ve struggled picking a proper size keyboard for a long time, for me the K5 is just the right size. There is no ‘reverb’ or ‘echo’ like I have experienced with the previous keyboards I have looked at before. Sure, you can get an aftermarket set, but that won’t have the shortcuts printed on the front, and even so it’s a bit disappointing to see that they haven’t thought of offering a higher quality set of caps for people who want that. It has a variety of lighting configurations and settings for you to mess around with via keyboard shortcuts.While I applaud Xtrfy for trying to bring mechanical keyboard customization to the masses (and I truly love some ideas such as the swappable top frame) this K5 RGB Compact just doesn’t quite feel good enough. Some of the biggest standout features for the Xtrfy K5 keyboard, for me, have to be the pre-lubed PCB-mounted stabilisers, hot-swappable switches and double-layered sound insulation foam, but, see for yourself in the keyboards spec sheet below. My first introduction to mechanical keyboards was the SteelSeries APEX TKL Pro which, while it is a very good keyboard, I have come to realise with experience – The Apex TKL Pro is not the most refined experience when typing or hammering away at an article or game – you can hear it a mile away.

This is a keyboard that aims to be completely customizable, even for people who don’t know a lot about the custom mechanical market. Something that caught my eye with the K5 RGB Compact (I will sometimes refer to it as ‘K5’ throughout this review) is that it’s the first mass-produced keyboard that I’ve seen with a shine through case. This barebone version gives you the keyboard base only, so you can add your favorite switches, keycaps, cable, frame and other parts separately. Due to the linear switching characteristics combined with the low spring resistance, the silver switch triggers directly.A quick note: I received both the black version and the transparent white version for review, though most of the photos that you see in this review are of the transparent white version as that’s the more interesting one out of the two if you ask me. When coupled with the rubberised adjustable feet, it is enough to stop the keyboard from sliding while in use. It’s a good mix of vibrancy and configuration that helps it stand out despite not having any software configuration options. Upon opening the box you are greeted by a welcome card that tells you how to get the most out of your RGB keyboard lighting as well as the keyboard which is protected with black plastic foam.
