About this deal

As the young pair grow ever closer, Charlie’s mother (Morton) becomes increasingly concerned for her sick boy and obsessive in her quest to shelter him from harm. As an Oscar nominee, Morton is capable of far more than this script provided and rather than letting the tension play out naturally, certain scenes were definitely over-acted.

The film’s underlying is a positive one; despite the unhappiness felt by many in the film they all act unselfishly, or at least that’s probably what they’re telling themselves. After Katherine meets up with Maryann's grandparents, and reveals to them that Andy is dying, they prohibit her from visiting Andy again. There are a lot of complex themes here and they are touched upon carefully, the direction is intelligent and clear; we never truly believe that Kathleen is entirely evil and you should be able to offer her up some sympathy. There was just one guy, a wonderful man named Gerry Kessler who died since the movie was completed, who wrote one check out of his own pocket, for 6,5 million dollars.

It was gonna be dark, instead it came out overexposed, it was gonna be original but came out like 'twas a remake itself; I dunno who gave it 3 stars, leave alone 5 [! As the mother, Kathleen’s only desire and drive comes from treating her ill son, and without that, she will lose her identity. There is a surprising finale, which is all the more hard-hitting because you’ve been on a long journey with these characters. She makes a lot of stupid, irrational decisions, but we are reminded that she is only human and prone to mistakes. It may seem like a bit of a chore at times, but there is a lot to enjoy in this quietly terrifying, character-driven horror thriller and it’s worth watching for Samantha Morton’s performance alone.

but if you're painting while in lockdown, you'd better off watching it dry than seeing this horrible waste of money and effort. For me it was an hour and twenty minutes well spent and I will be definitely recommending it to friends and family and of course to all you kind souls bothering to read my take on this truly underrated movie.

Still reeling from the loss of her parents, she takes it personally until one day when she is trapped in the house and she discovers the Young's terrible secret. John McNaughton sought a PG rating for the film, but failed: "I made a promise that I would deliver a movie with no overt violence, no bad language, no sex, no nudity.

A couple who keeps their sick son in a secluded environment find their controlled lives challenged by a young girl who moves in next door. She becomes unhinged when she learns that her new neighbour (Natasha Calis) has secretly befriended the boy, and has been encouraging behaviour she doesn’t approve of. We never know how Kathleen’s going to act and her personality shifts more suddenly than the British weather.
