Nightbreed: The Enduring Appeal of a Horror Classic Nightbreed: The Enduring Appeal of a Horror Classic

Rue Morgue's Cinemacabre Movie Nights, Toronto - 19 July 2012, with Mark Miller and Russell Cherrington...

Nightbreed has been characterized as containing themes related to queerness and the LGBT community. In 1997, author Harry M. Benshoff called it, "One of the first horror films to make an explicit connection between monsters and the activist politics of the queer community". [8] The head of marketing at Morgan Creek never even saw the movie all the way through, and he was the guy publicising the movie! He could never make it through the film; it disgusted and distressed him. He said to me at one point, 'You’re an intelligent man, why do you make these movies? They're disgusting and horrible.' And this guy was selling the movie!" Barton, Steve (April 1, 2010). " Nightbreed Uncut Report: Wondering What You Didn't See? We've Got the Answers!". DreadCentral.com . Retrieved April 12, 2012. The Cabal Cut. This is an extremely limited release, it was edited by Seraphim using the HD footage not previously available to the earlier versions of the Cabal Cut, but maintains the spirit and focus of the original. It has HD footage, and a little workprint footage too, where the scenes weren’t otherwise available in HD. This was a Seraphim release, available on the Realclivebarker.com store. It has a commentary by Russell Cherrington and Jimmi Johonson, and another by Jose Leitao and Ryan Danhauser. We’re so excited for this release. It is a collector’s item, so if you find one, I advise you get it right away. Scream Factory Facebook – Final Specs For Nightbreed: The Directors Cut Revealed!". Facebook. Archived from the original on February 26, 2022. The film’s potential magic, suffocated as it may be, was also on display in the cast Barker put together, which included Hugh Quarshie, Hugh Ross as Boone’s confidant Narcissus, the legendary Pinhead himself, Doug Bradley, as the leader of Midian, Lylseburg, Oliver Parker as the vampiric alpha male Peloquin, and Christine McCorkindale as the seductive porcupine woman, Shuna Sassi. In a 2012 interview, actress Ann Bobby, who played Boone’s girlfriend Lori Winston, revealed why the cast worked so well together. “I think Nightbreedwas a very sort of sterling example of what happens when a gifted director puts together his sort of cast that he knows will work well together that speak the same language. When I say language I almost mean a shorthand. There was a lot of freedom on that set in many ways.” We did a brand-new transfer [of the theatrical cut], about a month ago, from the inter-positive that Warner Bros. had, because the only other HD transfer that Warner had was an interlaced transfer and there was no way we were going to use that for this release, so yeah we did a brand-new transfer so the theatrical cut is from the new transfer and then the Director's Cut will be using that new HD transfer and then, when we transferred the missing footage we transferred it from the original camera negative so actually that footage may look a bit better than the actual movie does, because, you know, an inter-positive is a generation down from the negative... Theatrical Cut: This is the theatrical release, reshot and edited in a way that skewed it toward a slasher film, which was not Clive Barker’s intention. This was originally available on VHS/Laser Disc, and then a bare-bones DVD in North America in 2002. It was also called “Cabal” in an Italian release, but don’t mistake that for the Cabal Cut, which we’ll talk about a little later.Originally marketed as a slasher movie, the film is anything but. It is an epic story of a hero rising to defend the oppressed with the humans as the true villains. It is also hugely ambitious from the stunning makeup to the gigantic Midian set, this is an epic fantasy that feels like it had a lot more story to tell. To that end, there are sequel hooks aplenty and one wonders what may have been, had Barker been able to deliver this version in 1990. I have a friend, Mark Miller, who came to me and said, 'I want to pursue the missing Nightbreed material. I have some time off from my work. I want to do this.' I said, 'Well, there's no money, Mark. There's nothing in it for you except a huge thanks from me and from many, many, many fans if you were to be successful..." Morgan Creek: "So I have a bit of sad news to relay. After MUCH digging, hunting and trying our best to unearth where (if at all) the missing Nightbreed footage might be, we've come up empty handed. Therefore, that VHS that was screened at the convention is the ONLY footage that exists of a director's cut." This is a lovely deconstruction of creativity and what's necessary to make imaginations soar. Keen gives us his memories of working with Barker and the respect he shows the filmmaker is laudable. There were certain techniques that model makers used to bring a creation to life and the staff at Image Animation were asked to abandon the work flow and get into free form experimentation with whatever they could lay their hands on. It's the Dead Poet's Society equivalent of standing on your desk to get a new perspective. Image Imagination were literally 'torn apart' by the misrepresentation of their work in the Theatrical version. Bob Keen thanks his team after the most charming behind the scenes clip of Barker and the Breed dancing to some unheard tune. This is a really heartfelt extra feature. Fantastic work, folks.
