All of these species are able to remove the husk from the sunflower seed, whereas softbill species like Blackbird and Robin can’t but will readily take sunflower hearts - which are the same seed but with the husk removed.Black sunflower seeds are economical, rich in energy-giving oils and attract lots of wild garden birds.

Can plant indoors from March to May which is the better option as the slugs won't get fat on your seedlings.There is obviously some waste from them, but the plus side of being in their shells is that they do not clog the feeders after rain.
