About this deal

After The Silence by David Loschke is a fully entertaining, thoughtful, and thought-provoking read from cover to cover original and deftly crafted “is especially and unreservedly recommended for community library Science Fiction collections.

When a close friend of her niece, a student at the University of Cambridge, is murdered, Mariana becomes embroiled in the mysterious activities of a group of elusive students known as the Maidens and their enigmatic professor, Edward Fosca. Louise O’Neill is the feminist powerhouse and outspoken voice for change whose novels Only Ever Yours and Asking for It helped to start important conversations about body image and consent. Highly recommended if you enjoyed the West Cork podcast, or if you love books about family secrets, or books that make you sit up and want to take action.

There were many aspects that I really liked alongside many that I thought could have been done better or didn't quite work in specific areas. Ten years previously, an infamous murder roiled the tranquillity of life on the remote island of Inisrun. When morning broke, Nessa Crowley's lifeless body lay in the garden, her last breath silenced by the music and the thunder.

stars- This was a great read, very enjoyable and and thrilling read had me enthralled into it and hooked on every page such a page turner. It’s initially hard to comprehend why Henry and Keelin would choose to remain there after all that’s happened, but we soon discover there’s a reason. The resentment of the islanders towards the wealthy Kinsella family comes across loud and clear with plenty of tension, suspicion and mistrust. As the story progresses, we must wonder whether or not Henry is guilty—and if so, is Keelin covering for him, an unreliable narrator? When the truth is revealed at the end, it isn’t the big twisty shocker some readers – myself included – would have been hoping for. Most of the full sentences that were in Irish were translated after the fact anyway, so I don't really know what people are complaining about. I did spot the twists before they arrived and I felt that the pace lagged towards the end but overall I really enjoyed this and I’m already excited for whatever she comes out with next!
