About this deal

Premise: Set in the future on a mining colony, an “expendable” named Mickey 7 – someone built to die over and over again on dangerous missions, their mind re-uploaded to their cloned successor – is erroneously assumed dead, and comes home to find out they’ve already created his replacement, Mickey 8. However, dying isn’t as easy as one would think, even with the knowledge that a new version of you will be pulled from a tank of goo soon after.

The audio version allows us to listen to Mickey vs Mickey spats, life and death is no fun when your worst enemy is you. Unfortunately the story never really lives up to its potential, because as I said, it goes the route of becoming mundane. Since neither one’s to die and they’re sure one of them will eventually get killed anyway, they decide to split their calorie allowance and keep the whole thing a secret, but doing so in a small base in the middle of a frozen planet where barely 200 people live, and while dating someone, is easier said than done. La capacidad de Ashton para manejar las teóricas realidades de los desastres en los viajes espaciales interestelares y la colonización de otros planetas, además de mantener la historia liviana y entretenida, es impecable y brillante.

A wildly entertaining mix of action and big ideas peppered with humor and a bizarre love story, this novel is proof that, when done right, science fiction can be one of the most entertaining genres out there.

It's also funny how this is supposed to be two versions of the same guy, but from the moment I met 8, I disliked him. I also blew through this book in two sittings after having a hard time getting into a host of other books, so extra points for that! I wrote a short story a number of years ago that explored the idea of saving your consciousness and after you're killed, be regenerated, and in that way have a sort of crappy immortality as I describe it in "Mickey7. and I have been struggling lately with finding stuff that I like the sound of often enough to keep un with my reading.Don't bother watching the movie trailer though, unless you would enjoy watching 30 seconds of a naked bloke in a body scanner listening to classical music. I was reminded of Murderbot a little when I first read the description of this book, because both lead characters are unlike these they live and work with, and they are expected to do the distasteful and dangerous work of space colonization. A lot of science fiction starts with wanting to tell a story about a great technical idea and then put some cardboard characters around this idea to illustrate it.

The rules for Expendables are very clear—there can only ever be one version of Mickey in existence; any duplicates must be destroyed. This movie is built around the idea that a guy comes back to find that they’ve already created a new copy of him. This particular planet isn’t especially habitable, but has a lot of potential, and it’s up to a team of nearly 200 people to categorize and optimize this potential, so that it can be seeded with all the embryos they brought with them. Mickey7, the seventh iteration of Mickey, joined a human expedition sent to colonize Niflheim, a really cold planet, because he was looking to escape a gambling debt.Moonfall, Tenet, The Tomorrow War, Dune, Reminiscence, The Adam Project, Interstellar, Infinite, Life, Blade Runner 2049. Unfortunately, Expendables are assigned to the most dangerous duties and, when they inevitably die, they are replaced with exact replicas.
