Conflict of interest Significant differences in terms of average densities and average heights in the selected coral areas were tested through a Kruskal-Wallis test (data not normally distributed, square root transformed, n=10 - 220, and n=35 - 2913, respectively, for 17 coral areas). Significant differences between average densities, average heights, and average entanglement in the four considered depth ranges were tested through a Kruskal-Wallis test (data not normally distributed, square root transformed, n=3 - 170, for the four depth ranges).
