About this deal

Speaking of the end, it’s the only part of the book I didn’t love, as there were loose ends I didn’t feel were tied up (and I love when everything is tied up neatly! This case took place in the late 80s in the Midwest, and I was not familiar with it, but is a truly horrible and heartbreaking story.

For example, the small town police that don’t know how to do a good job, the close minded small town people that don’t know any better…. I am never a fan of a plot with an elaborate cover-up for an accident, something that happens in many books.

But maybe we’re supposed to just accept that the police were so convinced of Jace or Krissy’s guilt that they accepted suicide without investigating at all.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group/ Ballantine for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts. It is a small town mystery with sketchy characters rising out of the scene and I had my suspicions but quickly swept it under the rug with all their other secrets. i also think the handling of the sensitive topics that often come up in true crime was done pretty well. She also hosts several audiochuck shows, including top-rated podcast Crime Junkie, The Deck, Red Ball, and Full Body Chills. I’m glad I didn’t go by some of the not so great reviews and skip this one, because I thoroughly enjoyed this book!People who listen to true crime podcasts know that in a small town it’s easy to think that there are “All Good People Here. I think January’s fall down the stairs would have been seen as a tragic accident, due to sleepwalking or slippery stairs.

Krissy found Jace standing over his sister’s body and thought he killed January, so she staged the scene and moved the body. When she was six years old, the little girl across the street was abducted and murdered, the case went unsolved. And after Krissy finds Jase standing over January, she supposedly has enough time to get Jase back to bed (without asking him what happened, for some reason), get rid of the body, and spray paint the wall (again, why?And I’m pretty sure there would admissibility issues for evidence that was discovered as part of a break in. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. With all the old feelings rushing back, Margot vows to find Natalie and solve January’s murder once and for all.

There was a box for January, but strangely, it only had a few of her dance recital programs, and no personal items. While she's there, the town people started to remember who she is and she started to learn of the recent disappearance of a little girl. Very disappointing actions by one of the biggest true crime podcasts, not to mention the complete lack of personal ethics and morals.Twenty-five years ago, January Jacob's parents awoke to find their daughter's bed empty, a horrifying message spray-painted onto their wall. I find it hard to believe that they wouldn’t have looked into this very deeply, given the family’s history.
