About this deal

Now, he is 16 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes. After going viral in our documentary a couple of years back, the most famous DJ you have actually now heard of has released a biography that goes into even further detail about his story as the Soho club kid who turned the London and New York scenes upside down during the heyday of clubbing.

His sense of humour which is laced throughout the book, really helps the reader navigate these difficult topics, whilst never cheapening any of the sensitive points he makes.

We’d met several years earlier when I was an editor at The Sunday Times Style and had booked him to play a party. Tony does everything with a wink and a nudge, and his new book, slated for release in May 2022, makes for a must-read.

In the studio he is no slouch either, and has clocked up big dance hits like ‘Men Adore a Whore’ on Big Life by Fierce Child Collective, and is sure to keep on laying down his party starting sets everywhere from Moscow to New York to Kuala Lumpa. Some chapters I found the timelines abit off and in some bits did repeat itself quite a-bit in some paragraphs , but despite those small things you really get the sense that this is Tony writing this and no one else . I was up there and I was in a cell and I was like ‘thank god I’m on my own’, and then suddenly, in walks in this big guy and he says “hey, you alright”, and I’ve just been sat there crying. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. It’s incredible - the energy is back, the magic, I don’t know how long for because we like to ruin things, but we’ll see! On his mother reading the book, he said: “My mum knows everything about me, as much as I want her to know about me. The flamboyant DJ, who grew up on an estate in Battersea - and was given his first line of coke by Freddie Mercury at the age of 15 - first found fame as a drag artist in the 80s before turning to the decks in the 90s, and becoming part of a party set that included Tracey Emin, Kate Moss and Madonna. He watched his community die around him in the 1980s, he says, and doesn't shy away from the realities of the AIDS crisis, dedicating a chapter of the book to it. Few people have crammed so many lives into one: when your first line of cocaine is aged 16 with Freddie Mercury, where do you go from there?

Completely recommend, although it deals with some very dark subject matter and is incredibly sad in parts it is also hilariously funny and uplifting. In London, at that time, and in other places around the world - there was so much going on for members of my community. Up until that point, I was just listening to music, but when acid house came along I was actually feeling the music. So, I’d like to end this piece by saying thank you, Tony, for trusting me with your story and giving me this opportunity. Now, he is 16 years sober and, alongside working to help others overcome addiction, DJing for everyone from Elton John to Louis Vuitton and the Beckhams - and running one of lockdown's most popular Instagram accounts with its wickedly funny memes. But in Ibiza, we could be who we wanted to be, we could wear what we wanted to wear, and nobody would bat an eyelid.

He loves a good meme and crops up in posts from lots of people I follow in music and fashion circles. The reality isn't always engaging, when I wrote the chapter of the book on HIV, I didn't want to lighten it, it is what it is.

That changed really quickly, the wind changed when it became both more monetised and more criminalised. I mainly enjoyed the backdrop of an 80s and 90s central London music scene, from the New Romantics to early house to hard house and the evolution of the superclub and superstar DJ.
