About this deal

Technically, they are blended whiskeys from two distilleries. Johnnie Walker is one of the most famous brands of blended whisky. A light, fruit-forward spirit owes its character to some famously tall stills, married in more recent times to the enlightened cask maturation policy of Dr Bill Lumsden and the financial clout of its owner since 2004, French luxury goods monolith LVMH. Contrary to its name, Glenfiddich’s Bourbon Barrel Reserve is a Scotch whisky. Its name comes from the fact that alongside a traditional Scotch palate, this spirit also offers a sweet hint of classic Bourbon flavors.

The concept of blended whisky inevitably leads to confusion. Simply put, a blended Scotch whisky is a combination of single malt Scotch whisky and single grain Scotch whisky. Masters of their craft, these blends often take years to perfect, but create entirely unique drams offering complex flavour profiles. How we test blended Scotch whisky More recently, however, the company has stopped communicating this element of provenance, freeing it up to use other malts (specifically Ailsa Bay, located within its Girvan grain complex) when needed. Launched in 2005, this new-generation blended malt originally took all its whisky from three William Grant-owned distilleries: Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. For many years, Glen Grant was a family affair: established by brothers John and James Grant, with John’s son (also John, but better known as ‘The Major’) setting up the distillery to produce the trademark Glen Grant new make style of light, fresh and fruity. The biggest mover is not a single malt at all, but blended malt Monkey Shoulder, which enjoyed remarkable growth of more than 30% last year. Being able to draw on William Grant & Sons’ full roster of distilleries helps counteract the supply shortages that are currently affecting many single malts. No, not all single malt is Scotch [ 3]. However, it must be made in Scotland to be considered a single-malt Scotch whisky. A distillery can make it anywhere worldwide, but other requirements vary on the whiskey styles. Single malt is usually more expensive than other whiskeys [ 2]. It is highly prized like a single barrel because of its rarity and valuable commodity. Aside from the ingredients, the exclusivity of a lone distillery makes it more expensive. Famously medicinal, tarry Laphroaig now finds itself under the same corporate roof as fellow Islay distillery Bowmore, since Japanese group Suntory bought US-based Beam Global in 2014.

In general, distilleries that produce single malt do not produce single grain and vice versa. They tend to be separate establishments. There’s all kinds of casks maturing at The Glasgow Distillery The Glasgow Distillery cask programmeNose: Pears, floral honey, vanilla ice cream, green apple skins, orange boiled sweets, shortbread, and white pepper. Most whiskey connoisseurs agree that single malt is best to enjoy neat or with a splash of water. You will taste more of its profile than with mixed drinks. The wash stills have steam coils as their heat source and a moderate decline in the lyne arm angle which is attached to shell and tube condensers, while the spirit stills are similar, but are smaller at 1,500 litres. The size and shape were chosen to accentuate the fruity nature of the spirit. You might be wondering how triple-distilled whisky is made without an intermediate still, as is common in Irish whiskey. The spirit is run once through the wash still and then twice through the spirit still, and then a second time with the low wines from the previous distillation. With up to 80% of the quality of Macallan's end product being down to the wood that the cask is made out, the brand takes the time to source the right materials. By working with a company in Spain, choosing the right oak trees, and creating casks out of them, the flavour of the Macallan whisky is created. Single malt should be aged for at least three years; the age statement that reflects on the bottle is the youngest liquor inside.
