About this deal

At The Golf Shop Online, we are dedicated to offering you the most competitive prices. We continually compare our prices with those of our competitors to ensure you receive the best possible deal. In the rare event that you find a lower price elsewhere, we even provide a price promise* to further enhance your shopping experience. The ‘Sunrise & Sunset’ option is something I find useful, especially in the summer when the mornings and nights are lighter. Knowing exactly what time the sun comes up and goes down makes it much easier to plan your tee time.

Other than that, the numbers were usually much closer. 1 or 2 yards don’t make a difference to me, and I think the same would go for you. Overall, I was pleased with the accuracy. Garmin S42 Battery LifeGOES BEYOND THE COURSE - Whether you just finished a game and find yourself in the clubhouse or want to hit the town, Approach S42 is great for everyday wear. The S42 is one of Garmin’s best value golf watches and is the successor to the highly popular Approach S40. It has a larger screen and vastly increased battery life than the S40, but the golf functions aren’t too much different. In effect, you’re paying extra for the superior battery, as the S42 provides 15 hours in full GPS mode. That’s impressive and is more than enough even if you’re playing 36 holes. As the newer model, the Garmin S42 is generally priced slightly higher than the S40. However, considering the additional preloaded courses, improved battery life, and enhanced screen resolution, the S42 does offer added value for the extra cost. The only real downside is that the screen is relatively low resolution (just 176 x 176 pixels compared to 260 x 260 for the Garmin Approach S62), meaning less information can be displayed at once. There are also no touch controls (the watch is operated using four physical buttons along the edges). On the plus side, this means you're less likely to activate anything accidentally, but it also means navigating maps is less intuitive. That’s exactly what happened. I hit a nice, high drive but it had more cut on than I’d have liked. It cleared the trees and left me in decent shape. For my second shot I have 127 yards left to the centre with no hazards to worry about. I can see that the pin is at the front left of the green and a cool thing about the S42 is the ‘Move Flag’ function which means I can use the touchscreen to drag the pin location around the display of the green and it will give me an accurate yardage. I need to hit this around 122 yards, so an easy nine iron.

Joe lives in North Devon and still plays sporadically on the PGA West region circuit. His best round in recent years came earlier in 2023 where he managed a 9 under par 63 at Trevose GC in a Devon & Cornwall PGA Tournament. I also like the fact that the touchscreen is snappy and responsive. Other watches I’ve tried in the past were a bit glitchy, but that wasn’t an issue here. Garmin S42: On-Course Features The Garmin S42 has an improved battery life compared to its predecessor, lasting up to 15 hours in GPS mode. This means golfers can enjoy more time on the course without worrying about their watch dying midway through a round. The S40, on the other hand, can last up to 15 hours in GPS mode as well, but some users have reported slightly shorter battery life in real-world usage. The first decision you need to make is whether or not to keep score. If you choose not to then the watch acts as a GPS and provides yardages. If you do keep score you can either sync with the app on your smartphone during play or wait until afterwards. If you are keeping score but change your mind mid-round you can simply end the round and discard the data, leaving no evidence of your shame. A handy feature I’ve taken advantage of many more times than I care to admit.Slope/elevation: Have you ever had a simple 150-yard shot but ended up blowing it 15 yards long or leaving it well short? Chances are, you were hitting a shot that was up or downhill.

Also, you can see how you’re performing compared to other Garmin users (left image above). You can see how you compare to all golfers or narrow it down to people with the same handicap as you. How Accurate Is The Garmin S42? The solution therefore is to aim right then. Except there are two tall trees and another water hazard on the right. As I scroll through the hazards listed on the watch I can see that the trees are 160 yards away so not really in play if I hit a good drive. The trees are tall though so it’s not an easy carry, but based on the information I have the percentage play is to aim up the right centre of the fairway. Left is not an option but I know if I go further right than I’d like I should still be able to carry the trees and land in the wide open space behind them. COLOUR TOUCHSCREEN - Large 1.2″ easy-to-read colour touchscreen display with a metal bezel is stylish and lightweight. Garmin makes some of the most popular golf watches and the S42 is a model that offers a lot of features for a reasonable price. I wouldn’t say it’s for everyone, but it does offer a lot of value. You can also use the watch to see how far you hit each shot. It’ll store that data so you’ll be able to tell how far you actually hit each club. You’ll also know additional stats about your game that can be super useful. Garmin Approach S42: Specs Size
